Jata's Dream Finally Coming to an End???

With the 2012 MLS Combine & SuperDraft lurking just around the corner, some of the guys at the office were reminiscing about one of the more memorable parts of the drafts in the past. That being the speech given by my brother in 2009. Jason Saghini, the brain behind the production of the Rookie Life Series, told me yesterday that the main reason he selected Richard for the show was because of his speech. Most of the draftees featured in the program (found on MLSSoccer.com) consists of 1st and 2nd round selections. As most of you know already, Richard Jata was selected 58th overall, out of a possible 60. Go to the 3:54 mark in the video clip below to see the speech again. It's a moment that will stick with me for the rest of my life and I'm truly grateful MLS released it for all of us to see.

I remember the 2009 SuperDraft as if it were yesterday. Names of former teammates and friends of Richard's were getting picked over him left and right. Its as if his journey to IMG Academy and time with the PDL team in high school didn't amount for anything. Its as if his "nearly full ride" to Furman didn't mean anything - same recruiting class as Jonathan Leathers and Shea Salinas. Its as if turning down the 50% offer by Wake Forest (all they could do at the time due to funding) meant nothing. Its as if his game-winners in Campbell's 3 consecutive victories (2007-2009) over UNC got lost in the other, more important scores. Richard's decision to accept a full ride to Campbell University might have been a poor decision in terms of exposure, but in essence, it might just end up leading him to his future wife.

Its a shame to see such a talented and dedicated individual like Richard get wiped away from the game he gave his life too. Some may say it happens all the time - and I might agree to some extent, but this is different. I saw the sacrifices he endured growing up as a teenager. He left home and all of his friends to go to IMG Academy as a sophomore in high school. He practiced hours upon hours all by himself while his friends were out partying and living it up. He was a 15-year old kid on a mission and nothing was going to get in his way.

After finishing the 2011 season with the newly refurbished Wilmington Hammerheads squad of the USLPRO, Richard is finding it harder and harder to support himself and his future decisions without a steady job. He realizes that if he wants to take the next step with his longtime girlfriend, Ashley Smith, he's going to have to give up on his lifelong dream of becoming a professional soccer player and start looking for that 9 to 5. Unfortunately, for a college graduate with little experience on his resume other than a long list of awards and accolades contributed mainly to soccer, its tougher than you might think. Seen in the image on the right, Richard has had to pickup a holiday season stint with UPS just keep up with his bills, while he continues to look for a full-time job with benefits.

Richard's professional career may have been brief, but he certainly made an "Impact"!?! After spending the entire 2009 preseason with the Chicago Fire, Denis Hamlett decided to release him in favor of a developmental player who spent the previous season with the team. The trails in France were also brief and the language barriers were nearly impossible to breach. After talking to people during the teams visit to FC New York in 2011, I can see why he doesn't want to return for the 2012 season either. The pay is horrible and the coaching is nothing to be desired. Young players need to be encouraged at times and if there's a lack of mutual respect from both parties, the relationship between player and coach will not succeed.

I ask myself this question all the time, Why were the Soccer Gods so good to Richard in high school and college - blessing him with knowledgeable coaches who exuded guidance and direction - but so cruel to him at the professional level, where a coach can be the most influential person in your life? I can only imagine what a coach like Sigi Schmid or Peter Nowak could've done with Richard had they been given the chance.

This year I turned 28, and on my birthday I received a package in the mail from North Carolina, where Richard currently resides. As I walked to my room to open my gift, so many things popped into my head. What could it be? Seconds after ripping off the wrapping paper I realized what it was. There in front of me was the only professional game-worn jersey my brother will ever wear. Along with the gift was a card that read this, "Ben,...I wanted you to have the only official Jata #9 jersey from my first pro season in the USL. I want you to know that I have only achieved my success in soccer because I had a close brother helping me all these years. You inspired me to be great so here is a thank you gift for helping me! I love you!" - Richard

So now that the story of "Richard Jata - The Soccer Player" finally comes to an end and "Richard Jata - The Family Man" starts its journey, there's one person I want to send a special thanks to:

To my younger brother, Richard Jata, YOU have truly inspired me to do great things. I look up to you for what you have accomplished and I will cherish all the moments we spent together playing soccer growing up. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving me the joy of following you on your journey through all the ups and downs. Its truly been an amazing ride. Without your enduring passion for the game and monumental success at the college level, I'd have nothing to write about. Your professional career may end with a one-year stint at a club some people would never give the time of day to go see, but I did and I'm extremely grateful I got to witness it. My contributions to your career may seem insignificant to some, but at least I know they meant a lot to you. Love Ya Bro!

No Glory Tonight...Hammerheads Lose 5-4 in PK Shootout!

With their star center midfielder, Luke Mulholland out with a Hamstring injury, Wilmington would have to look elsewhere if they were going to get past a strong Richmond team. Right from the get go the Hammerheads pushed the attack, controlling possession for the first 20 minutes of the game. The first scoring opportunity of the game came when Andriy Budnyy took on a few Richmond defenders and blasted a left-footed shot from just inside the box on the left side, but the Kickers goalkeeper made a great diving save to keep it level.

Richmond looked uncomfortable for the majority of the first half, sending several passes out of bounds. However, a couple Hammerheads fouls deep in their own half opened the door for the Kickers to capitalize. Fortunately, both free kick attempts were blocked.

Wilmington controlled possession for the remainder of the half, but couldn't get anything going offensively. The long balls weren't doing anything as Richmond played more defensively as the half progressed. Going into halftime the score remained 0-0.

#5 for the Richmond Kickers was yellow carded in the 47th minute for throwing an elbow on Tanner Wolfe deep in the Hammerheads territory. Moments later Paul Nicholson was cautioned as well for a double leg tackle in Richmond's defensive half.

Tanner Wolfe's header from the top of the box in the 52nd minute off a cross from Dylan Riley sailed wide of the net. Tom Parrat's shot from distance in the 57th minute also sailed high after a great build up by the Hammerheads. Moments later Garreth Evans went down after colliding heads with a Richmond player. Evans remained down for several minutes before coming out on his own will. The Hammerheads played with 10 men for the next few minutes until Evans returned with a fresh new jersey(#20) and a bandage around his head.

Richmond had a 3 on 2 break in the 70th minute but the shot was blocked and cleared by Dylan Riley. The Kickers found the back of the net in the first half and again in the second half, but fortunately for the Hammerheads, both were called back due to fouls in the box.

Richard Jata and Andres Cuero were subbed in for Tanner Wolfe and Jack Avesyon in the 73rd minute of play.

The best chance by either side came in the 90th minute when E. Elcock weaved his way through the Hammerheads defense, but a huge save by Brock Duckworth kept the scored tied nil-nil. It had to be the save of the night! A few last ditch efforts were made by Richmond, but the Hammerheads snuffed them out. Now we head to extra time.

Wow! A huge save by Brock Duckworth right out the gates to keep the score tied. The Hammerheads had a great opportunity off a Chris Bagley throw-in in the 93rd minute that was headed just over the crossbar.

Tom Parrat was cautioned in the 99th minute for dissent. A few minutes later, #23 for Richmond was cautioned for a hard foul on Richard Jata near midfield. At the end of the first overtime period, the Richmond Kickers had more opportunities, but Wilmington maintained the majority of the possession.

Chris Murray came on for Manny Guzman in the second overtime period due to leg cramps. Diego Barrera checked in for Paul Nicholson a few minutes before the end of the second overtime period.

The Hammerheads were awarded a free kick just outside the box with no time remaining in the second overtime period. I thought Richard Jata was going to win the game with one his spectacular free kicks, but Andriy Budnyy took it instead, sending his team's final attempt in the second overtime straight into the wall.

With the entire Wilmington midfield already subbed out and Chris Banks replaced by Chris Bagley, it was all in the hands of the subs and Brock Duckworth to advance to the semifinals.

Penalty Shootout

(2-2) - Richard Jata drills his attempt towards the left post and in
(3-3) - Diego Barrera puts his attempt in the side netting just inside the right post
(4-4) - Andres Cuero's attempt is stopped initially by the keeper, but trickles just inside the left post and in to keep it tied at 4 a piece going into the final kick.
(5-4) - Chris Bagley shoots to the right side, but the Richmond keeper gets a hand on it before it bounces off the inside of the post. The goalie gets up and dives to save it on its way back across the net.

USL PRO Playoff Preview - Hammerheads vs. Kickers

The Wilmington Hammerheads closed out the 2010 regular season with a 2-1 victory over the Dayton Dutch Lions Saturday night. With it they clinched home-field advantage for the first round of the playoffs which begins Friday night. Jack Avesyon and Chris Banks scored for Wilmington with Andryi Budnyy getting the assist on both of the goals.

The Hammerheads finished the season 14-7-3 which was good enough to lock up 2nd place in the American Division. The team scored a league-leading 42 goals, but let in 30, which was the second most allowed in their division. They went 9-3-0 at home, scoring 25 and allowing 15. They went 5-4-3 away from home, scoring 15 and allowing 15.

#4 Charleston Battery at #1 Orlando City, 7:30 p.m., Florida Citrus Bowl

The Richmond Kickers have been victorious in both of their previous matches against the Hammerheads with their most recent victory coming at Legion Stadium on August 10th. They have a solid finisher up top in Matthew "Deli" Delicâte, who's been in the league since 2004. He leads Richmond with 23 points on 10 goals and 3 assists. At 6'3" and 190 lbs. "Deli" is a threat both in the air and with the ball at his feet. Wilmington will have to set the tone early and really keep an eye on him in order to limit his chances.

The Kickers finished the 2010 season with 41 points and a record of 12-7-5. They scored 35 goals, which was the third most in their division and let in just 21 goals, which was the second least in their division. They went 8-3-1 at home, scoring just 20 times, but allowing only 11. Surprisingly, the team actually allowed less goals away from home(10), but scored less as well, notching 15 goals and finishing the season with a record of 4-4-4.

Keys to Success for the Wilmington Hammerheads

The concern for this Friday's upcoming match is the health of Wilmington midfielder, and the teams' leading goal scorer, Luke Mulholland, who left Saturday's game in the 31st minute with a nagging hamstring injury. Mulholland could be in better shape as we inch closer to game time, but I highly doubt he'll be at 100%. Midfielder Manny Guzman also left the match early, but should be okay to play.

Tanner Wolfe got the start against Dayton so it's quite possible he'll be in a similar role on Friday. Richard Jata was subbed in for Guzman at halftime so you could see him get some increased playing time if Luke and Manny are late scratches. Both players have come a long way this season and I'm sure they'll be ready for the challenge that lies ahead. Either way you look at it, the Hammerheads will have to do something different than what they've done in the past if they expect to make it past the first round.

If Wilmington makes it past the first round they will face the winner of the Charleston Battery vs. Orlando City matchup. If the Charleston Battery win, the Hammerheads will get to play their second round match at home, but if Orlando City wins the team will have to travel to Florida for the weekend of the 27th.

Hammerheads Inch Closer and Closer to First Place in the American Division with a Dominating Show on the Road

Shortly after arriving at St. Johns University(Belson Stadium) for the FCNY vs. Wilmington Hammerheads game, the rain started coming down. Roughly an hour before kickoff it was nothing but a cloudy haze, then lightning struck and the teams were sent to the locker room until further notice.

After the 30-40 minute delay and puddle sweeping in one specific corner of the field on the teams' sideline, play was resumed. The rain had stopped and the field had dried, but during the National Anthem things got a little out of hand. A torrential downpour followed for the next 10-15 minutes until the referee blew his whistle at the 10:09 mark and asked Brock Duckworth for the ball.

Both teams were once again sent to their locker rooms and play was postponed. Shortly after the rain had stopped the teams made their way back onto the field. The game was almost called off due to extreme flooding on certain parts of the fields, but out of nowhere the field dried up and FCNY personnel took care of the excessively flooded areas.

I was extremely impressed with the FCNY staff and they really helped this game get done. Both teams are set to travel to away matches this weekend and a rematch was something everyone wanted to avoid. After starring at puddles on the field get bigger and bigger, once the rain stopped, I was amazed to see that this turf dried faster than any field I've ever seen before. One spot on the pitch was flooded, but at one point the whole field was flooded and sure enough it dried up and the game was back on.

The game was resumed finally at the 10:09 mark and Wilmington wasted little time getting on the board. Andriy Budnyy chipped the keeper ever so eloquently in the 29th minute giving the Hammerheads a 1-0 lead. The game would remain that way going into halftime.

With the rain gone and the field in better condition, other than a few moments, the second half was utter domination. The Hammerheads put consistent waves of pressure on FC New York, and in the 52nd minute Luke Mulholland got his goal, putting his team up 2-0.

In the 55th minute Gareth Evans blocked a shot attempt on goal with his hand and the referee wasted little time awarding a penalty kick for FCNY. Evans was issued a yellow card and Jhonny Arteaga had Brock Duckworth guessing the wrong way when he tucked it away to the right corner.

A few minutes later the New York had a chance to equalize when the ball was bouncing around near the Hammerheads 6-yard box, but no one could finish it off. The ball was eventually cleared away and led to a fastbreak opportunity for the league leader in goals. Mullholland netted his second goal of the game and put Wilmington in a great position with less than 30 minutes to go.

The team had two goals called back, one for offsides and one for a handball by Andres Cuero(shown below), which could've easily made the final score 5-1. Coach Irving used five subs in the second half, trying to rest some of the guys for their upcoming game vs. Harrisburg City Islanders.

Wilmington now sits on 36 points (11-6-3), moving into second place in the American Division. They play tonight at 7pm at Skyline Sports Complex in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Tanner Wolfe Nets His First Professional Goal as the Hammerheads get some Revenge on Charlotte (Video)

Just days after Richard Jata scored his first professional goal on a through ball from best friend Tanner Wolfe, the first year pro got a taste of glory for himself. The Hammerheads struggled to get on the board Friday night in Charlotte, suffering a 1-0 defeat to their interstate/division rivals. After getting back to Wilmington early Saturday morning, the Hammerheads bounced back by putting in 3 goals and giving up none, even after being out-shot 11-10.

Tanner Wolfe was inserted into the starting lineup on Saturday night and made Coach Irving look like a genius. Already with a 2-0 lead going into halftime, the Hammerheads showed no signs of letting up early into the second half. After a shot from midfielder Luke Mulholland in the 47th minute ricocheted off the crossbar, Wolfe's reaction sent his body into flight. He left his feet and connected on a diving header, beating the outstretched arms of the Charlotte goalkeeper who left his feet as well while attempting to make the save.

The goal was Tanner's first of his professional career and you could see the joy in his eyes while being congratulated by his teammates. The link below has a great shot of the goal and celebration, plus a post-game interview with the man himself.

The Wilmington Hammerheads have now received goals from 14 different players this season. That amount of depth and confidence from the players will really help them going into the final stretch of the season. Their recent win over Charlotte also put them into a tie for 2nd place in the American Division with the Richmond Kickers. Both teams now sit at 10-6-3 and 33 points through 19 games.

New York Update: Yesterday a few of the guys took the train into Manhattan and I got to know them a little better. Some of them had never been to the "city that never sleeps" so it was cool to see their reactions in the ever so entertaining and energetic environment. Richard Jata Scores His First Professional Goal as the Hammerheads Manhandle City Islanders 3-1 (Video)

The Wilmington Hammerheads bounced back in a big way Saturday after suffering a heartbreaking loss to the Charleston Battery a few days earlier at Blackbaud Stadium. On Thursday night the visiting Hammerheads were up 1-0 in the second half, only to see the Battery come back and score two big goals en route to a 2-1 victory over their division rivals.

On Saturday night the Hammerheads had a little comeback victory of their own. Harrisburg City Islanders came into Legion Stadium and found themselves leading 1-0 going into halftime. The Hammerheads have a great record at home and let Harrisburg know rather quickly that they wouldn't be going down without a fight.

Andres Cuero started the rally, netting a goal in the 65th minute to tie it up 1-1. Andryi Budnyy found Luke Mulholland in the 76th minute for his second assist of the night and Mulholland's team leading 6th goal of the season, giving the Hammerheads an outright lead with less than 15 minutes to go. In the 85th minute, Richard Jata finally put and end to his cold streak, scoring his first goal of the season and the first of his professional career on a brilliant finish. Jata received a pass from his best friend and high school teammate Tanner Wolfe that sprung him through to face the keeper one on one. Jata kept his composure and chipped the keeper to give the Hammerheads a 3-1 with less than 5 minutes left in the game. Highlights from Tuesday's US Open Cup match vs. RSL

The video below has no sound, but you can only imagine the 7,000 plus fans cheering on every opportunity Real Salt Lake had Tuesday night. Chances were limited for the Wilmington Hammerheads, which most people knew would happen in advance, but RSL dominated play for nearly the entire game. While listening to the broadcasters commentate the game via radio, it became obvious to me that the game could've gotten way out of hand, easily ending 4 or 5 to nil.

I don't know whether or not Wilmington expected to have more chances or if they thought they could manage the wave of attacks mounted by RSL, but you can see from the highlights that they gave them too much too often. The Hammerheads are good going forward in the midfield, but they lack the cohesion and discipline to get back and play defense for a full 90 minutes. Defending counter-attacks and constant pressure on the opposing squads midfield is essential when playing at a higher level. I guess you can put most of the blame on Wilmington's lack of fitness. Since watching and covering both the USL PRO and MLS, it's easy to see the differences that make up the distance between these divisions. The one thing that stands out to me the most is fitness, in that MLS teams are constantly training to get more fit, while USL PRO teams train just to stay fit.

Hopefully things will change in the coming months and the Hammerheads strive to be that team who runs circles around their opponents. Otherwise, a chance at a USL PRO Championship seems highly unlikely, at least to me. There are two things, besides skill and cohesion, that turn good teams into championship contending teams, one is determination and the other is fitness.

Wilmington Hammerheads vs. Real Salt Lake Preview

Over the past few week the Hammerheads have struggled to find their rhythm. Today they are on the way to Utah in preparation for tomorrow's Lamar Hunt US Open Cup matchup against a very strong opponent, Real Salt Lake. The altitude could have the most significant impact on the Hammerheads because I'm not expecting a huge turnout from the fans. You'll likely see only certain sections open up to the public which should help the Hammerheads feel more comfortable than a normal MLS opponent.

Real Salt Lake are a team with a load of talent and a great coach to go along with them in Jason Kreis. He was a dominant player in MLS for years and now he's starting to prove his talents as one of the best up and coming coaches in the league. Jamison Olave was recently named Defender of the Year and numerous players just spent time with their respective national teams. Alvaro Saborio plays for Costa Rica, Alturo Alvarez plays for Honduras, Will Johnson plays for Canada and GK Nick Rimando was third on the depth chart for USA. All three field players saw significant time with their respective national teams.

Opta and MLS have been working together to give the fans more in-depth analysis on how every player contributes during each game. Take a look at the link below and play around with the chalkboard program. Each player has a heat map graphic that shows their activity on the field throughout the game. You can breakdown a single player, multiple players, or the entire teams output into 7 categories; distribution, shots, set-pieces, defense, ball possession, fouls and goalkeeping. These 7 categories can then be broken down individually by the separate actions that make up each category. For example, the distribution category is made up of successful passes, unsuccessful passes, through balls, flick-ons, lay-offs, headers, crosses....and the list goes on and on. It's extremely rare that you get to see so much information for free and it's something that can help a lot of teams study their future opponents.

BREAKING DOWN REAL SALT LAKE...

I've been analyzing RSL for the entire season thus far and its safe to say that they work extremely well together both on and off the ball. Kyle Beckerman is their captain and their rock. He's good with the ball at his feet and is very consistent when it comes to his pass completion rate. Jamison Olave is a physical beast at defense and Nick Rimando is arguably the #1 goalkeeper in all of Major League Soccer at the moment. They like to maintain possession and push the attack slowly througout the game, unless of course they're down, then they really pour it on. Now lets break them down by position.

CENTER MIDFIELDERS

I don't see RSL coming out with their regular lineup after playing two games in the 4 days. However, they're coming off a strong 3-1 win in which Beckerman contributed on all three goals. He is a workhorse so I expect him to start almost every game no matter what.With Beckerman occupying the holding midfield position in a diamond formation, Collen Warner or Andy Williams will most likely get the start at the attacking center mid position. Williams is a deadly set-piece specialist so beware for him to shoot anytime there's a free kick within distance. The Hammerheads should be physical with RSL as a whole, but especially with their central midfielders.

Javier Morales, likely the teams best player and early MLS MVP favorite is still out after breaking his ankle in a match earlier this year. He was a significant player in the teams success during the beginning of the season and he has been hugely missed since going down.

OUTSIDE MIDFIELDERS

Ned Grabavoy and Will Johnson usually run the outside midfield positions, but since the loss of Javier Morales to injury early in the season, Grabavoy and Johnson have both spent time in the center of the pitch. Johnson is more of a holding/roaming mid and his freedom allows him to push up the field or receive the ball deep and pick out the forwards making runs. Grabavoy is a workhorse as well and is more likely to make those overlapping runs than Johnson. Expect them to switch sides throughout the game and creep into the center of the field more frequently than not. Beckerman and Johnson take most set-pieces from midfield going forward, but Johnson can shoot from distance so the Hammerheads would be wise not to give him much space when he has the ball.

Luis Gil, a 17 year old U-20 USA National team product has had quite a bit of playing time lately so if he's on the field come kickoff time the Hammerheads should put relentless pressure on him. Gil is the most inexperienced player on their team, so it would be beneficial to make him as uncomfortable as possible. He normally plays in the midfield, but started at forward last week because injuries have really limited RSL's attacking options on the depth chart.

FORWARDS

Fabian Espindola was injured this past weekend so expect him to miss Tuesday's game. Alvaro Saborio and Arturo Alvarez are both back after spending time with their National team for the 2011 Gold Cup and Saborio had a strong showing this weekend, netting two goals in his return to Real Salt Lake. RSL is short on strikers now so expect Saborio and Alvarez to get some playing time on Tuesday if they're healthy. Another player that has seen quite a bit of playing time at forward this year is Jean Alexandre. Jean is a big physical presence and was drafted by RSL in the first round(12th overall) of the 2009 MLS Superdraft. He is strong on the ball, with quick feet and a powerful shot to say the least. If he's match fit expect a lot out of him in the attacking third of the field.

Richard Jata and Jean were two of the nine rookies showcased in the 2009 series, Rookie Life: Diary of a Draft Pick, along with a few other up and coming MLS players in Steve Zakuani, AJ Delegarza and Chris Pontius.

OUTSIDE DEFENDERS

Just like any pro team, expect these outside defenders to make deep overlapping runs and carry the ball all the way up the field. Chris Wingert is primarily the starting left back, but Tony Beltran has also spent time their this season. They're both predominantly left-footed, but Beltran can also play on the right. Robbie Russell shares starts with Beltran at right back and is the most physical of the three. These defenders can dive in too early at times, leading to deep free kicks for opposing teams.

CENTRAL DEFENDERS

Jamison Olave and Nat Borchers are the starting central defenders for RSL, but it's quite possible the Hammerheads will see Chris Schuler and Rauwshan McKenzie. All of these players are big, tall and aggressive. They're deadly in the air and should be tightly marked on set-pieces and corner kicks. At defense, these players don't have exceptional speed so they can be beat on through balls. If they play their back line high enough, the Hammerheads should focus on some good of-the-ball runs that put players in a one-v-one with the keeper. Don't expect much success from corners and crosses as RSL is one of the best defensive teams in the league. They aren't lazy when it comes to clearing the ball out of their own 18 and they mark up really well when it comes set-pieces and corner kicks. I think the key to getting past RSL is to play as quick as possible, leaving them as little time as possible to set up their defense.

KEYS TO SUCCESS...

If Wilmington wants to win this game they have to play a smart, physical and high intensity game. They cannot give RSL any free space to create opportunities which means every player has to have each others' back throughout the ENTIRE game. I'm expecting a lot of possession and pinpoint distribution from RSL, so the Hammerheads should have their attacking core pressing at all times. You do not want to give their midfielders any extra time on the ball. I would also avoid playing to high of a line in the back because their experience and accuracy will cause problems for the Hammerheads defense.

As far as the attack goes for the Hammerheads, test the keeper as much as possible. Corners and free kicks lobbed into the box are likely to be weeded out. Wilmington should take their chances on shots outside the box from the 20-35 yard range. If Rimando is in goal, he will be hard to beat no matter what, but the Hammerheads have players who can strike the ball from distance and that's when things can happen. Parried saves and shots off the post/crossbar should be pounced on immediately. If we can get an attacker or two close to goal during these opportunities, I think they'll have a chance to put in a loose ball or rebound. The likelihood of scoring on one of the best defenses in all of MLS is slim, so Wilmington need to make every opportunity count if they want to come out victorious.

Hammerheads Grab Crucial Points In Each Road Match

The Wilmington Hammerheads had success in both of their road games this past weekend. Friday night's game had some late drama due to the harsh weather conditions. The referee stopped played in the 79th minute and called the game shortly after. Unfortunately for Wilmington they gave up an equalizer just after they took the lead early in the second half. Still, managing to grab a point in Rochester with some many things not going your way, is a great achievement.

Saturday night the Hammerheads faced off against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds in another rematch from earlier in the season. Both teams were limited to just a few chances on goal and neither were able to capitalize. The game ended in a scoreless draw and Wilmington headed home for some much needed rest before their next match against Orland City(7-1-2).

Orlando City has kept a somewhat low profile this season, but just recently leapfrogged the Richmond Kickers(6-2-2) to grab the #1 spot in the American Division. The Hammerheads are facing stiff competition week in and week out, but their home field has proved to be a significant factor thus far in the season. The game coming up against Orlando City will take place on Saturday, June 4th at Legion Stadium so come out and show your support.

In a side note, Ivan Becerra was recently named to the USL PRO Team of the Week for his efforts in the two road ties this past weekend. He's been both a goal scorer and shut down defender so far this season. His leadership has proved to be very influential in the teams success to date.

Richard Jata is still nursing a shin/knee contusion, but it's quite possible he could return to action in the teams next match against Orland City.

Wolfe Shines In Professional Debut - Hammerheads win 3-0

The Wilmington Hammerheads notched another win this weekend moving them into 4th place in the American Division. The Charleston Battery were outmatched for most of the game, but managed to keep the game close until Battery defender and captain John Wilson received a straight red card. Luke Mulholland netted his 2nd goal of the season in the 27th minute and when the Battery were reduced to ten men, he struck again, netting his 2nd goal of the night and 3rd of the season in the 85th minute.

A crowd of over 4,700 came out for the interstate rivalry and they made their presence felt. In the 90th minute, Hakop Aveyson put the nail in the cofen off an assist from Tanner Wolfe. Wolfe got his first minutes ever as a professional, when he was subbed on right around the 86th minute mark. It's been a long time coming for Tanner Wolfe and Richard Jata, who both starred as high school seniors on the same varsity team.Both had very successful college careers for their respective squads and it's great to see them playing alongside each other at the professional level.

Injury & Weekend Update: Jata received some treatment on his leg today so hopefully he can rebound in time for the teams double header next weekend. The Hammerheads will take on the Rochester Rhinos Friday night and the Pittsburgh Riverhounds on Saturday night. Both teams will be out for revenge after losing earlier in the year at Legion Stadium in Wilmington,NC. Hopefully the games will be shown on usllive.com, so have a look as the weekend draws near.

Revamped Divisons Make For A Tough Road Ahead

With the removal of three teams from USL PRO, the International Division has been removed. Since Antigua Barracuda FC(6-4-0) and the Los Angeles Blues(4-2-2) have been moved to another division, in order to fix the fixture layout, the American Division just got even tougher. With a 6-4-0 record Antigua jump straight into second place, right behind the still undefeated Richmond Kickers.

The Wilmington Hammerheads currently sit in 5th place of the American Division, but they've only played four games. Their record is 3-1-0 and they are averaging 2.0 goals per game, while only giving up 1.0 goals per game. The Hammerheads and Harrisburg City Islanders have played the least amount of games so far. Antigua Barracuda has played ten games and 3 other teams have played eight.

If the Hammerheads are victorious today over the always talented Charleston Battery, they will jump ahead of them into fourth place of the ever so competitive American Division.

Jata has been out for the last two weeks with a shin/knee contusion. The extent of the injury is uncertain at this point, but while practicing a bit here and there, he has struggled to get back to 100 percent. With Jata sitting out the last two weeks, Chris Banks has stepped up to give the Hammerheads an extra attacking weapon. He notched two goals in last weeks' win and I'm looking for him to step it up again to help keep their undefeated streak at home alive.

Jata Says F50's Work Great On The New Turf (Videos)

Since the brand-new artificial turf was laid down at Legion Stadium in Wilmington, NC, the Hammerheads are undefeated at home. However, some of the players have decided to go with a different boot because the surface presents various challenges when striking the ball. Soreness in the bones and muscles are also a concern due to the rigidity of the field. It's a comfort thing, so those with more experience playing on fake grass might not be affected as much.

The main difference between a normal boot and one that's made for artificial turf is the length of the cleats. Shorter cleats help with both the plant foot and the foot striking the ball. The plant foot tends to get stuck in the surface with longer cleats so this can be essential for corner kicks and set-piece specialists. The length of the cleat also helps the player get under the ball and control the lift. Another major difference between the F50 Aidzero and other cleats is the lightweight design. The F50's are only 5.6 ounces, making them one of the lightest boots on the planet. Imagine what a lighter boots does to help a player on the field. The less weight you have on your foot should make for a quicker and more powerful strike. Chasing opponents down and off the ball runs should improve as well.

Arguably the best soccer player in the world, Lionel Messi, has chosen to play with the F50 Adizero cleats and it looks like they're working out just great for him. He is the quickest and most controlled dribbler I've ever seen. Honestly, he'd be great playing in any cleat, but I'm sure he chose the F50's for a reason. I've heard that they actually help the ball stick to the cleat, allowing for better overall control when dribbling. Messi keeps the ball so close to his body making defenders look silly when they try to swipe at it. Will the F50's help Richard Jata do the same? We'll see, he sure looked quick last game.

Two Late Goals Propel Hammerheads Past Riverhounds 3-1

In the first half of the match on Friday night the Wilmington Hammerheads dominated possession, but failed to find the back of the net. Their best opportunity came from a nice flick-on by Andres Cuero that left Richard Jata open for goal, but his shot sailed just over the crossbar. The Pittsburgh Riverhounds remained on the defensive side of the ball for the most of the half and came away with little success at all going forward.

In the second half, the Hammerheads stepped it up a notch and found themselves attacking the Riverhounds rather easily once again. Just like their first match, the Hammerheads came away with an early goal in the second half by Andriy Budnyy on a nice pass from Luke Mulholland. The goal came in the 56th minute and from then on the game really opened up.

Richard Jata was subbed out for Alex Grendi around the 65th minute and 15 minutes later the Riverhounds got their equalizer. Wilmington was clearly dominating the possession battle up until this point, but after a great cross and header combination in the 79th minute, the game was tied 1-1.

Justin Evans, Head Coach of the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, fed up for most of the game, was cautioned in the 82nd minute after the Riverhounds were whistled for a foul at midfield. The following free kick was sent into the box, but a failed clearance by the Riverhounds found the foot of Paul Nicholson just outside the box on the right side. He took a few dribbles and blasted a shot to the near post low and hard for what would prove to be the game-winner. At this point it put the Hammerheads back up 2-1, but there was still some more action left to be seen.

In the 92nd minute the Riverhounds goalkeeper came all the way up for a corner kick, but a quickly cleared ball by the Hammerheads fell right to Chris Banks who took the ball up-field in a hurry. He had an open teammate near midfield with a sure chance of putting a shot on goal. Unfortunately an unsuccessful touch gave the ball right back to the Riverhounds, without any shot attempt on goal.

Not even a minute later the Hammerheads put the nail in the coffin. After a couple consecutive shot attempts by Jyler Noviello, one off the post, an unmarked Alex Grendi tapped in a free ball near the 6 yard box to get his first goal of the season. The Wilmington Hammerheads remain undefeated for the season, and at home(2-0), but the true test will come next weekend when they travel to Virginia to face a deadly Kickers squad. Attendance for today's game was just under 3,000.

The winner of this game will be the only remaining undefeated team within the American Division, unless the Kickers lose tomorrow night against the Dayton Dutch Lions. It should be a great game regardless, with the winner of the match coming away as the only undefeated team in the entire league besides the Los Angeles Blues.

The Hammerheads had a significant amount of rest between their first and second games, so I can only expect a well-rested and well-prepared team come Friday night. I just finished watching the game again on usllive.com and there were many things to take away from their performance.

The midfielders and forwards were always moving around, making it very hard for the defense to keep track of them. Our defense remained calm on the ball for the most part and the team really controlled the entire first half without much attack from the Rhinos. The mids and forwards put constant pressure on the Rhinos back line even when they weren't in possession of the ball, forcing the Rhinos into several turnovers and giveaways.

ANALYSIS ON THE PLAYERS:

Paul Nicholson distributed the ball well, while maintaining the defensive midfielder role for most of the game. Luke Mulholland and Richard Jata looked solid offensively, creating opportunities when they had the ball deep in the oppositions half. Gareth Evans likes to stretch the field with the long ball. Dylan Riley got forward and made good overlapping runs from time to time. Chirs Spendlove played a full 90 minutes at left back and had a strong showing. Ivan Becerra consistently switched the field and seemed very confident running the back line. Andriy Budnyy struggled to get anything going in the first half, but had a good individual scoring opportunity in the 25th minute and contributed to goal that was eventually called back early in the second half. Manny Guzman and Andres Cuero were quiet offensively, but helped force the Rhinos into committing several mistakes. Brock Duckworth wasn't tested much at all in the first half, but came up big in the second half to preserve the shutout. Alex Grendi looked sharp offensively in the second half and helped create some good scoring opportunities.

There's a couple good scoring chances for the Hammerheads - one by Richard Jata - before the goal by Luke Mulholland. I missed a couple key saves made by Brock Duckworth in the closing minutes, but they have that on tape as well. Check it out below!

Hammerheads Victorious In Season Opener 1-0

When I found out that the season opener for the Hammerheads was pushed back until 2pm on Sunday I was stoked. Unfortunately, I would've missed the whole game had it been at it's original time, but as it turned out, I got to see nearly 80 minutes of uninterrupted play thanks to usllive.com. The starting lineup was very similar to the one I posted in my previous article and things seemed to work pretty well for the most part.

Richard was battling a bad cold, but managed to get an extra half-day of rest with the postponement, proving most helpful when it came to gametime. He had a strong showing with several forced turnovers, a couple good corner kicks, a very close free kick from the left side just outside the box and a left-footed shot from the top of the 18, in which the GK made a diving save to prevent a sure goal.

I was genuinely impressed with the cohesion of the entire team, especially with their composure at the back. It seemed like the defenders were very confident on the ball and unafraid to make a move and carry the ball forward before dishing it off to the mids/forwards. The defense took normal launches/clearances and distributed them nicely, avoiding a kickball mentality that a lot of teams resort to when being pressured. In the first half, I wouldn't be surprised if the possession battle was 65% - 35% in our favor. The back line was superb!

In the first half our offense was just as effective. Off the ball mids and forwards pressured the Rhinos into making several bad passes and numerous turnovers. The entire midfield, led by Luke Mulholland, got down and dirty without hesitation. The Hammerheads committed a few fouls, but overall their tackling was on point. When the second half came around, I knew we were going to get a goal....it was simply just a matter of time!

After Wilmington's first goal was waved off for offsides in the 51st minute, Luke Mulholland made an all-out dash, beating the Rhinos keeper to a ball coming from right to left across the front of the goal. When Luke slid he was near the corner of the six-yard box going away from goal. He gathered the ball and retained possession all in one swoop right before the diving keeper could get his hands around it. I was simply amazed that he came up with the ball so cleanly. Luke got up and took a touch before finishing the ball with ease for the first Hammerheads goal of the season! Right after the goal, a fantastic celebration followed! Mulholland ran towards the corner flag near the Home crowd side and took out the corner flag with a flying double leg kick! It was Awesome!! Shortly after that the rest of the team piled on him, making it an incredible moment for all Hammerheads fans!

Richard was subbed out in the 77th minute and shortly after that the Rhinos had a crack at goal. Brock Duckworth remained strong in net and helped keep the clean sheet for the Hammerheads. The 1-0 victory is a great way to start the 2011 season, especially in front of the home crowd!

On the eve of the Wilmington Hammerheads first game since being dropped from the league, a lot has to be on the mind of both the players and Head Coach David Irving. Ivan Becerra and Paul Nicholson have been named team captains for the 2011 season and Nicholson had some great things to say about the mindset of the team going into their first game - you can here more from Becerra and Coach Irving here.

2011 Wilmington Hammerheads - Player List and Bios

Expect Head Coach David Irving to implement a 4-3-3 lineup which he's used quite frequently in the preseason. After the recent signings and final preseason match against Hurricanes FC I've come up with a lineup I think we could see tomorrow night, with a few minor tweaks here and there. Obviously Jyler Noviello had an impressive preseason so if he's healthy you might see him inserted somewhere at the attacking end. Luke Mulholland has a cast on his right hand so if he's cleared to play expect to see him on the field, but if he's not, you might see Richard drop back into a central midfield role where's he's played most of his career. I think GK Kyle Pollack will miss the first game so look for Brock Duckworth to get the start in goal. Other notable players that will probably see some playing time are: Alex Grendi, Tanner Wolfe, Tom Taylor and Chris Banks.

The whole organization is looking forward to an exciting and successful season. With the brand-new turf field recently installed at Legion Stadium and a lengthy selection process of developing a solid squad, I'm expecting good things to come for the city of Wilmington. I hear that the anticipation for tomorrow's match is quite high and emotions from fans, players, coaches and owners should make for a very entertaining environment. I really wish I could be there to see it all transpire, but I can't, so I have some friends checking it out for me. Hopefully I'll have some great pics(possibly some video clips) to share with you on Sunday or early next week sometime. From what I understand there's a special treat planned for the fans who attend tomorrow night's game.

FOX Soccer Channel & USL PRO Agree to 3-Year Deal

FOX Soccer and USL PRO have announced a deal that will bring 10 games directly to your living room in 2011. This is really good news to me because I doubt I'll be able to make it to any of Richard's game this year. The schedule below lists the "Games of the Week" that will air on the most popular soccer channel in the world. Along with these games, FSC will also televise the PDL(August 13th) and W-League(July 31st) Championship. The first episode of 2011 is scheduled to air in May. UPDATE: The Hammerheads lost their April 2nd battle against the Carolina Railhawks 1-0, but Coach David Irving still noticed a lot of great things. He had this to say about the match; "We had more chances than them. All in all, if it was a boxing match we would’ve probably won on points. But unfortunately, you’ve got to put the ball in the back of the net."

After suffering their first loss of the preseason, the Wilmington Hammerheads finished strong, crushing the Hurricanes FC Club Team 5-1. Goals came from Andriy Budnyy, Andres Cuero, Chris Murray and Alex Grendi. The Hammerheads had a dominant preseason run, but it's going to take a lot more than that to be successful this season. I think the players know that and cohesion seems to be setting in. I think the players are becoming more familiar with each others style of play and I can't wait to see what the stating lineup is going to look like.

MLS - Looking Ahead (Informative Opta Update)

Week 3 in the MLS should be another great week, full of awesome goals, hard tackles and controversial coaching decisions! Unfortunately, both the Chicago Fire and Real Salt Lake have off this weekend, so my main responsibilities will be the Houston Dynamo and LA Galaxy. I haven't done the Dynamo yet, but seeing as how I just finished the post-match analysis on the Houston vs. Seattle game yesterday, I feel confident taking them this week. When you do post-match analysis you get to know both teams extremely well because you spend so much time looking at every single player. Knowing this, I'd definitely feel comfortable doing the Seattle Sounders FC as well. When doing live-game analysis, some teams are harder to do than others and there are many factors that play a role in how good the analysis turns out. A lot of networks have camera views far away from the field and this generally makes the players much harder to identify. Jersey color can also play a factor. When you have shirts and shorts that match in color, it can be hard to tell if the player has his shirt tucked in. Also, most numbers are barely visible from the views we have so our focus has to be on everything else. After this weekend I'll have done, Chicago, LA, RSL and Houston. Our training was done with the Colorado Rapids so I know them too. By the end of this season, it's quite possible that I'll have done analysis on practically every team in MLS.

All in all, the 2011 season is certainly living up to the hype. MLS is really taking things up a notch this year and its been a lot of fun being apart of it. The website is better than ever and their article content is extensive. If you haven't checked out the Podcasts yet, I suggest doing so because they can be really informative and new guests are on the show all the time. Matchtracker is running at a high level and every piece of data we enter in our matches is updated instantly to the web. Every game this year has video highlights posted during the game, and if you're into Apple products, the app for the iPad/iPhone is great for checking in on all the action.

Wilmington Hammerheads Continue To Roll - (Turf Field Update)
Last night the Hammerheads took on UNC-W in a wet and challenging environment, but came out as the victors yet again. The team boosted it's preseason record to a promising 6-0 start. The final was 3-1 with Jyler Noviello scoring two goals to lead the way. He's the teams leading scorer this preseason and a likely starter at forward on opening day. Richard took the night off with a minor hip injury, but should be back in time for the teams next preseason match. From what I understand only 14 players took part in the game so it looks like a quite a few were sidelined with injuries as well.

Good news coming from Wilmington is that the new turf field at Legion Stadium is finished. Coach Irving said that the field will definitely take some getting used to and that it's going to play really fast for the time being. He knows that the more they play on it, the better it should feel to the players and the more it should settle. I've never really played on turf, but I'm assuming it can be quite different for some of the players. The Hammerheads next match is scheduled for this Saturday against the Carolina Railhawks of the NASL.

Wolfe & Seabrook Add Goals vs. UNC-Pembroke

The Hammerheads traveled to UNC-Pembroke for their 4th preseason game on Tuesday night. There were both old and new contributors this time. The final score was 4-1, with the Hammerheads finally giving up their first goal of the preseason. Chris Banks and Jyler Noviello scored again, but Jordan Seabrook and the recently acquired Tanner Wolfe also put the ball in the back of the net. Right now it looks as if Wilmington will have several threats at the attacking end. They extended their preseason goals scored total to 12, while holding all 4 opponents to just 1. The team will have one week off before playing their next game against UNC Wilmington on March 30th. This game should be fun for some of the players who played their college ball at the local college. Jordan Seabrook played his college ball at USF and participated in the 2009 Adidas MLS Player Combine alongside Richard. He was selected 51st by the Colorado Rapids, but was released before the start of the season. Tanner Wolfe played his college ball at Stetson University, consistently battling Richard year in and year out for the top spot in the Atlantic Sun Conference. While at college, Tanner tallied 33 goals and 18 assists leaving him 5th all-time in points at Stetson. Richard and Tanner are longtime friends and played high school ball together their senior year for Ridgewood High School in Port Richey, Florida.

UPDATE - It looks as if Seabrook's glory will be short-lived because most of the trialists are heading home. Tanner Wolfe, however, is staying put!

THIS JUST IN - Tanner Wolfe, Kyle Polak and Diego Barrerra were officially added to the roster, pending USL and USSF approval. Each of these players had a successful college career and played either semi-pro or pro ball in recent years. Wolfe has scoring potential at either outside mid or forward, Polak will most likely assume the backup GK role and Barrerra should fit in somewhere towards in the middle/back. I'm assuming the team is nearing 20 players by now, so it will be interesting to see how much more they can do based on funds. I'm also not sure if Alex Grendi has, or will be signing in the near future.

MLS First Kick & Hammerheads Preseason Game

It was an amazing week of action for Major League Soccer. The LA Galaxy started off week 1 with a 1-0 win over Sounders FC on Tuesday, then followed it up with a 1-1 draw against the NE Revolution on Sunday. Both Galaxy goals were scored by Juninho. Saturday brought action from so many different places in the U.S. and Canada, numerous story lines and lots of heart-pumping action. The Vancouver Whitecaps drew a sold-out crowd of nearly 23,000 cheering fans in their opening match and they rewarded them with a 4-2 victory over TFC. Charlie Davies put up 2 goals for D.C. United in a win over the Columbus Crew. Omar Bravo notched Player Of The Week honors with 2 goals vs. Chivas USA, proving that he could be a significant addition to Sporting KC this year. The Colorado Rapids, last years MLS Cup Champions, looked really sharp in their first match with a 3-1 win over the up-and-coming Portland Timbers. Goals were scored by Jeff Larentowicz, Omar Cummings and Jamie Smith. Oh, and Dwayne De Rosario scored the 8,000th goal in MLS history.

My main focus on Saturday was the Chicago Fire vs. FC Dallas game at 830pm and Real Salt Lake vs. San Jose Earthquakes at 1030pm. In the opening game, I thought the Chicago Fire really came out looking sharp with their questionable 3-5-2 formation. Ristic and Segares played the outside mid positions, both showing the ability to get forward with the attack and help on defense when needed. The Fire defense looked relatively good, although Jalil Anibaba and Bratislav Ristic both got beat by Zach Loyd leading to FC Dallas's only goal. Milton Rodriguez was on the receiving end with a beautiful left-footed flick-on that beat Sean Johnson with ease. Chicago's goal was scored by Diego Chaves, his first MLS goal in his first ever MLS match. One part of the match Chicago couldn't capitalize on was Brek Shea's red card in the 55th minute, which he received for his "last man" take-down of Gaston Puerari. Next week Chicago(4pm) will take on Sporting KC at home and FC Dallas(9pm) also plays at home against the San Jose Earthquakes.

Chicago Fire vs. FC Dallas - Preview, Recap & Match Highlights (1-1)

OPTA ANALYSIS...

All throughout the season Opta will take weekly statistics to a whole new level. We analyze all 50/50 challenges, aerials won/lost, tackles, launches, crosses, passes, clearances, headers...basically every single touch on the field. One of my favorite stats is the "Take On". With this stat we will be able to see how many times a player "take's on" another player and determine a success rate depending on the outcome. Zach Loyd came up big vs. the Fire with a huge assist to Milton Rodriguez, but what I really liked about his effort and what will be noted as the season goes on, was his ability to get past both Jalil Anibaba and Bratislav Ristic. Loyd deserves just as much credit for that goal as Rodriguez, and with Opta keeping track of that now, everyone will be able to see who has the ability, tenacity and success to take his team to the next level. To understand the way Opta analysts interpret the game(and take-ons), view the FC Dallas match highlight above and you will see why Zach Loyd was given so much credit for the goal.

My next match was with one of my favorite teams to watch in the entire league and my early favorite to win it all, Real Salt Lake. They took on a persistent San Jose team in monsoon like conditions. Kyle Beckerman scored RSL's only goal on a well placed strike from the top of the box, hitting off the left post before beating GK Jon Busch. The pressure San Jose put forth after that was relentless, but RSL GK Nick Rimando certainly earned his paycheck, securing a 1-0 victory for his squad. The ball was all over the place with swirling winds and pounding rain, making almost every shot on goal a major problem. After it was all said and done, the Earthquakes out shot RSL 16-11 with and 8-2 advantage in shots on target. Next week RSL(9pm) and New England(430pm) both play at home against the LA Galaxy and D.C. United respectively.

Hammerheads win 3rd straight preseason game
The Hammerheads traveled to Coastal Carolina on Sunday and grabbed a 1-0 victory, bringing their preseason goals scored total to 8. Alex Grendi was responsible for the goal this time, his second of the preseason. Wilmington's GK's and defense must be doing something right because they have yet to let in a goal. The team will travel to UNC-Pembroke on Tuesday with kickoff set for 7pm. This will be their 4th preseason game in the last 10 days. I'm sure the team is still trying out different players at various positions, so it's unlikely that David Irving is playing the starting team yet. However, look for the lineup to become more secure as opening day draws near.

MLS Signs Multi-Year Deal With Opta

While Richard gets prepared for his next preseason game against Coastal Carolina, I'm getting ready to for week 1 at MLS in New York. Something new from MLS this year is their deal with Opta, an England based data analysis company. With Opta running at full speed tomorrow, all MLS games will be analyzed to the extreme. The live game-analysis and technology behind Opta is extraordinary stuff and it will revolutionize the way we view players for years to come. If you are unfamiliar with Opta, check out their website. As of now, it looks like my main priority will be RSL, but I'll probably be responsible for Chicago, LA and Chivas when needed.

Opta takes data analysis to another level. Not only do they breakdown every single ball touch, recovery, aerial, tackle, foul, thrown-in, pass, goal kick, corner, shot and goal, they also record the outcome. We all know the importance of a pass won or a pass lost, a tackle won or a tackle lost, a take on won or a take on lost and an aerial won or an aerial lost. The information Opta analysts gather over the course of a game can be very useful with regards to player scouting and tactics. I did the Galaxy vs. Sounders game on Tuesday, and when it was all said and done, we had entered roughly 1600 events. After each match is over, Opta does a post game-analysis assuring everything entered or missed is correct. All data gathered over the course of the season will be available for purchase. The picture shown above (on the right) is the final product distributed to buyers. It is mind-blowing to say the least!

Just two days after their first practice of the 2011 season, the Hammerheads traveled to Buies Creek, NC to take on the men's soccer team from Campbell University. The game ended in a 3-0 shutout, favoring the newly designed USL PRO squad from Wilmington. Goals were scored by Christopher Banks, Ivan Becerra and Richard Jata. I'm still working on acquiring some footage from the preseason opener at Elon, but if I do you'll be able to catch it all here. I know everyone is really excited about the upcoming season and I couldn't agree more. The anticipation is growing...

Opening day at Legion Stadium is exactly one month away and the Hammerheads can use every opportunity possible in preparing for that day. Their next preseason match is against Coastal Carolina(Conway, SC) on Sunday, March 20th. If you can't make it to a regular season game once the season starts, don't worry because I heard that some games might be shown nationally on FSC.

Hammerheads Dominate First Preseason Match

The Wilmington Hammerheads wasted little time getting their first win of the 2011 preseason. Richard scored on a beautiful free kick in route to a 4-0 victory over Elon. Chris Murray, Jyler Noviello and Alex Grendi also added goals, giving the Hammerheads some confidence going forward. Tanner Wolfe has been invited back for a second look, with hopes of locking down a spot on the final roster. As of March 10th, I believe the unofficial roster count was at 16. It's quite possible we'll hear a couple more signings this week, but as far as I know all tryouts are over with and only players cut from MLS teams this week will be invited to camp from now on.

Campbell University, Jata's old stomping ground, is the next stop on the road to opening day(4/16). The game is scheduled to take place this Wednesday, in Buies Creek, with kickoff set for 7pm. Back at Legion Stadium sections of the new turf have been laid down. Hopefully things are coming along fast and error free. Either way, the stadium should boast a vastly improved appearance by opening day. This is what the field looked like as of March 1st. From what I understand, as of today, turf installation is running smoothly and sections have been laid down from one endline to the other. Now the main focus is on getting the sidelines done, perfecting the installation, working out all the kinks, painting, etc.

Jata Finds A Home In Wilmington

It's official, Richard Jata has signed with the Wilmington Hammerheads for the upcoming 2011 USL PRO season. After finishing off his last semester at Campbell University, where he used his free time as a volunteer assistant coach, Richard decided to move to Wilmington and try out for the Hammerheads. I guess it's true what they say, God does work in mysterious ways. With soccer as hard a sport to get into at the pro level, Jata kept the drive and persevered to accomplish something a lot of doubters out there thought he'd never do. After being drafted by the Chicago Fire and getting released just days before the 2009 MLS season began, Jata traveled all over the country and even into Europe on his quest to sign his first professional contract. Well, the time has come, now we just have to wait and see what's left in the tank. I think Richard(25) still has what it takes to make a significant impact in the pro circuit. I mean, if the Wilmington Hammerheads signed him, he's got to be doing something right...right?

The signing came nearly one week after his initial tryout, where roughly 30 players competed for a shot at making the team. I guess volunteering with the men's soccer team at CU was a smart idea because ultimately it gave him the opportunity to stay fit, both mentally and physically. There are still quite a few roster spots left to be filled, so stayed tuned. The best is yet to come!

Moving In The Right Direction...

After a couple years of "chasing the dream" Richard finally returned to Campbell to finish his degree. With soccer still on his mind, he decided to take up a volunteer assisting coach position with his former team. Jata was able to help his former teammates and the incoming freshman in many different areas. He was also able to practice and travel with the squad, leaving him fresh for future opportunities down the road.

Jata still has many things he'd like to achieve and something tells me you haven't heard the last of his name at the next level. Whether it be playing or coaching, my brother still has a strong passion for soccer and the desire to keep it apart of his life. From a dominating youth career that included time at IMG Academy and numerous ODP teams, to Player of the Year honors and being named a NSCAA All American, it would be a shame to lose a player from the sport who is as knowledgeable and battle-tested as Richard.

I have a hunch that some new information will be available shortly, so check back soon. I've posted a short clip below from the past that I shot while visiting our parents in Florida.

Dynamo Season Over, Jata Returns To School

With soccer at a standstill for the time being, Richard Jata has decided to go back to school and finish his degree. When the Chicago Fire drafted him 2 years ago, he left school a semester early to pursue a career in professional soccer. Jata is on schedule to finish his degree and he accepted a volunteer coaching position with the Campbell Camels. Former teammate Aaron Johnson is now an assistant coach and Jata is very happy to be back. He's excited for what life has to offer and isn't officially calling it quits.

It's too bad soccer in the U.S. is so far from where it needs to be. Players aren't being given the opportunity to develop properly and talented players like Richard are looked over because of the "politics" involved. I'm really ashamed with the effort put forth by the USL and NASL. The web coverage is half-ass. There's tremendous potential in several players and the inability to take them to the next level is pathetic. Some people don't understand that USA soccer is actually really important to millions of people in America. Why can't we make the proper progress we need to make the sport successful? Drastic changes need to be enforced and a lot of people need to get fired...

Jata Scores, Dynamo Win 3-0

It's been an on and off season for the Carolina Dynamo, but it looks as if they will come up just short of making the playoffs. Currently they sit in 3rd place with only one game left remaining on the schedule. Things would be a lot more interesting if the Dynamo had pulled off victories in their final three away games, but instead they came out of it 1-1-1. Jata notched his first goal of the season in their last game against Central Jersey. The team's final match of the season is Saturday, July 24th against the Bermuda Hogges. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30pm and all fans who come out for the game will get a free team photo.

World Cup Final, 3rd Place Game & Highlights

The 2010 World Cup has been an amazing event. A Ghanaian friend of mine from college flew to South Africa for the Uruguay vs. Ghana game. He said the atmosphere was ridiculous and borderline scary, but one of the most exhilarating moments he had ever experienced. Watching Landon Donovan score in the final minutes of the Algeria game was one of the most memorable moments of the tournament for me and it's something I will never forget.

Yesterday we saw Uruguay take on Germany in a battle for 3rd place. Germany had several starters out, but still managed to pull off a 3-2 win. They rallied from a 2-1 deficit with Sami Khedira scoring the game-winner in the 82nd minute. Both teams had impressive runs and showed a lot of heart. Diego Forlan(age 31) and Miroslav Klose(age 32) were dominant forces, but it looks as if their chances of lifting the World Cup trophy in the future are long gone. It's been really great seeing these two players battle it out on the pitch the last few weeks in their quest for the golden boot.

With the World Cup coming to an end, the final should be one of the most exciting games of the tournament. The Spaniards have touch, skill and they dominate possession of the ball. The Netherlands have tremendous pace and are a threat to score at all positions. I'm extremely excited for today's game and Spain's lack of scoring depth is pushing me towards naming the Netherlands as favorites. The only thing holding me back is Spain's ability to possess the ball and completely control the game. Holland is unbeaten in their last 25 games and several players have 1 v 1 capability. My gut is telling me Holland, but my soccer background is telling me Spain. Who will win and be crowned the 2010 World Cup Champions?

My prediction - Spain wins 1-0 and takes home the country's first World Cup trophy.

Semifinal #2 - Germany vs. Spain

This is the matchup we've all been waiting for. Spain were the early favorites(besides Brazil) and are the highest ranked team left at this point. The Germans have been dominant on all sides of the ball and the most entertaining team to watch throughout the tournament. I have watched every single game of the 2010 World Cup and I still get extremely excited when Germany steps onto the pitch.

Both teams have star athletes, but the Germans have played slightly better as a "team" up to this point. However, the Spaniards are not far behind with their possession of the ball dominating every opposing squad. The Germans can pass, make great runs, and are a superb at finishing off their counter attacks. Spain controls the possession and their passing is second to none, but their finishing ability has not been there with Fernando Torres looking absent to say the least. Obviously, David Villa is Spains' biggest scoring threat. For the Germans, everyone is a scoring threat. Unfortunately, Thomas Muller(4 goals) will miss this match for accumulating too many yellow cards, but with Miroslav Klose, Mesut Ozil and Lukas Podolski all tallying goals this tournament, I think Germany will do just fine.
My two favorite players in this matchup are David Villa(Spain) and Miroslav Klose(Germany). Both of these players bring the desire and determination to score goals. Villa has been Spain's only weapon on the offensive side of the ball and Klose is a great finisher. Klose is one of the most prolific scorers in World Cup history and at 33 years old, he brings extreme leadership to a very young squad. I love Germany's midfield tandem in Sami Khedira and Bastian Schweinsteiger. They make great runs off the ball and are reliant on the defensive side as well. It's no question that Spain's midfield duo is also one of the best, so the Germans will be put to the test in this highly anticipated semifinal matchup.

My Prediction - Germany wins 1-0 and advance to their 8th World Cup Final.

Semifinal #1 - Uruguay vs. Netherlands

The 2010 World Cup has been very exciting to say the least. From disallowed goals and offside blunders, questionable no-calls and numerous cards, extremely fast players and exhilarating moves, the World Cup has been everything I expected it to be and more! Today's matchup brings together two teams with very different stories. Uruguay won the first ever World Cup, but have been relatively absent as of late. They were given 100-1 odds at the beginning of the tournament, but have certainly proved that they belong here with exciting gameplay from Diego Forlan and Luis Suarez. The Netherlands are heavily favored in this matchup despite never winning a World Cup. Their fast gameplay and precision passing have really helped them progress through the tournament. Dirk Kuyt and Wesley Sneijder have been great for the Netherlands and Arjen Robben brings a lot of speed out on the wing.
No one expected to see this matchup, but it's here. My two favorite players in this matchup are Diego Forlan(Uruguay) and Wesley Sneijder(Netherlands). These two players are brilliant on the ball and they have incredible vision. They also bring creativity, determination and extreme confidence. Forlan has been a huge scoring threat and a great distributor of the ball. Sneijder has kept the Netherlands in the tournament leading his team with 4 goals. My sleeper player is Dirk Kuyt because he brings 110% every time he steps onto the field. He's not the most talented player on the team, but his effort and unquestionable hustle to every 50-50 ball is second to none. When the World Cup is over, I will choose a 1st and 2nd starting XI. As of right now, Forlan and Sneijder have both proved that they deserve a spot on my 1st team. Who will join them?

My prediction - Netherlands win 3-1 and advance to their 3rd World Cup Final.

Tanner Wolfe Contributes, Immediately!

Right now the Carolina Dynamo sit in 5th place of the Mid Atlantic Division in the Eastern Conference. With 10 games played, their record stands at 4-4-2. They've scored 22 goals(2nd most in the division) but have also given up 19 goals, which is the 3rd most in their division. Only the top two teams qualify for the playoffs so the Dynamo definitely need to step their game up if they plan on having a successful run at the PDL Championship.

Richard Jata has been playing a variety of positions, but has yet to net his first goal of the season. He's getting limited minutes and is still trying to find his role in the system. Someone who seems to be fitting in quite well is Tanner Wolfe. Richard's best friend and former A-Sun Conference rival led the Dynamo to a 2-1 win Saturday night against the West Virginia Chaos. He played phenomenally, scoring a goal in both the first and second half.

The team does not play again until July 8th, when they will take on West Virginia again in a rematch at Schoenbaum Stadium. There are only 6 games left on the schedule so they must finish strong if they have any intentions of making it to the playoffs.

Soccer Is A Part Of Life...

After a brief layoff from the sport, Richard Jata has returned! Having previously played for the Carolina Dynamo, Jata was welcomed back with open arms. The Dynamo started out their 2010 season with a 1-1 tie and a 4-0 defeat, but since Jata's arrival the team is on a roll, winning 3 of their last 4 matches. Richard notched his first assist on a Scott Rojo goal in the teams 4-1 victory over the Hampton Roads Piranhas. He started the first 3 games as a sub, but finally got his first start of the season last Sunday against the Ironbound Express. He played 62 minutes, leaving with a minor injury to his foot. Richard said that his foot is fine and he's looking forward to contributing to the teams success in the near future!

The Dynamo's next game is at home, on June 12th, against Hampton Roads Piranhas.

Kickoff is set for 7:30pm!

Vince Petrasso Signs w/ Harrisburg City Islanders

After 4 solid years at Campbell University, the Vince Petrasso coming out party has officially begun! The Harrisburg City Islanders passed on the 2008 Conference Player of the Year in Richard Jata, but decided to sign the 2009 Conference Player of the Year instead. Campbell University sports writer, Stan Cole, recently posted an article listing all of Petrasso's stats and achievements.

Richard could not be any happier for his former teammate, roommate and close friend. In an interesting note, Jata was actually with Petrasso when he received the call from the Harrisburg coach to come join the team. He said it brought the both of them tremendous joy!

I have watched Vince progress over the years and it's truly a pleasure to see him make a professional team. At the moment, Vince is fighting for a starting spot with the Harrisburg City Islanders. All I ever wanted to do was document my brother's journey towards a career in professional soccer, but I guess some people see it another way....

After Richard attended his second combine with the Tampa Bay Rowdies a couple months ago, I wrote an article(check back a few posts to see it). Well apparently, some of the Rowdies' execs viewed my blog and weren't pleased with what was written. No big deal for me, right? WRONG! It turns out, the Rowdies WERE interested in signing my brother, but because they didn't appreciate the things I mentioned on this blog, they decided not to offer him a contract. Richard was told(flat out) by his former agent, that what I wrote deliberately ruined his chances of signing his first professional contract. It's silly to think what a few words can do to affect someones future! To me it seems childish. I'm mean, this blog was originally created to get Campbell University press. It shifted to Richard when he left for the pros. It might have given Richard press before and during the combine, but he didn't need it after he got drafted and made his speech. At that point, he had made his own press.....I just documented it!

This blog has been reading material for friends, family, former teammates and parents, but after Richard became known throughout the states, more people tuned in. He became somewhat popular amongst soccer fans and people wanted to follow his story. So I wrote! Richard never asked me to do any of this, but I did it because I love him, I love to write and I look up to him(even though I'm taller and older). When Richard told me that I ruined his chance of signing a contract with the Rowdies, I was crushed! My intentions were harmless and they should be meaningless to coaches and GM's, but then again, I guess I got some pretty important people reading my blog, huh?

With these comments, I wonder if I(in any way) hurt my brothers' chances of signing with the Chicago Fire. Richard obviously proved himself by beating out all the other draftees and trialists before getting released. The Fire fans loved my insiders view on the preseason and the updates on their team. Just look back at the comments on my posts from last preseason. Some of the things I wrote about could have be shared with the public, but there are clubs out there that don't want to make the effort. So I ask myself, was Denis Hamlett reading my blog?(Haha, I doubt it) Did he not like the information I was sharing with the rest of the world? These are the things I have to live with now. All I ever wanted to do was help my brother, but in all actuality, I might have ruined two perfectly good opportunities for him to get that contract.

Months will go by, without any word from coaches or teams, but the players are talking. Richard has grown up playing soccer with several players in the MLS and USL. They all want to know why he STILL hasn't signed with a team!

Jata Has Plans To Reunite With Joe Brown

Richard Jata went to the Puerto Rico & Harrisburg City Islanders tryout in Orlando, FL with an open mind. Sure it wasn't the Chicago Fire, but all he really wants to do now is play ball. The coaches seemed to like what Jata did on the field, notching the only assist on a well-placed through ball in the final game of Day 2. Unfortunately, neither were looking for a center-mid so no immediate offers were made. With little time left until the MLS and USL seasons begin, it looks as if Jata will have to put his dreams on hold yet again.

However, this has given Jata more motivation than ever. Earlier today he talked to Joe Brown(Head Coach for the Carolina Dynamo) and told him that he wanted to come back to the team for the upcoming season. The Carolina Dynamo are one of the most prestigious PDL programs in the country so Jata has absolutely no regrets going to play for them.

Richard told me that he is determined to wear the Captain's band and lead the Dynamo to yet another successful season. His primary focus and main goal is to win the Lamaar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. With the possibility of competing against MLS and USL teams who passed on him, there will be no holding back. Not one bit!

With much speculation going around that this blog is written by Richard Jata, I just wanted to bring some clarity to the situation. I(Ben Jata) started this blog when Richard was a Senior at Campbell University. I felt that CU wasn't getting any exposure and I wanted the rest of the country to know more about them. Gocamels.com is CU's athletic website and that is why I named this site gocamels.blogspot.com. After Campbell's season ended, I decided to put the focus mainly on Richard and follow his journey towards a career in professional soccer. His former coaches and teammates, along with friends and family, have really enjoyed the updates I have brought them through this site. I followed him to the combine to give all the readers a firsthand look of what I saw up close. Then he made the trip to the Superdraft, got selected and delivered his memorable speech.

The Chicago Fire drafted Richard with the 58th pick and I made it a point to follow him closely through the 2009 MLS preseason as he fought for a position on the team. This gave the Chicago Fire fans a chance to follow his story along with the rest of the team. People from Chicago really enjoyed the updates because there wasn't a lot of information available at the time. Things started out great, but the ending wouldn't be the same. Denis Hamlett told Richard this as his time with the Fire came to an end; "I think I should give you the benefit of the doubt(because you were sick and injured), but I decided to stick with players I had last year." He said this because Richard had missed a lot of time in the preseason due to an injury and an illness he caught while in Mexico. Still, Richard was the last player in preseason camp to get released(#25 on the roster at the time). Ever since then I have watched my brother fight so hard to play the game that he loves, only to see him disappointed time and time again.

My brother has been training VERY hard the past few months. He has a lot of people in his corner rooting for him, hoping he succeeds, but we can only do so much. If you are a professional coach interested in my brother, talk to Joe Brown(Carolina Dynamo), talk to Doug Hess (Drexel Head Coach), talk to Tom Durkin at IMG Academy. They will all tell you the same thing; Richard Jata is a very talented soccer player with all the potential in the world. He has the raw natural ability needed to be successful at the professional level and his love for the game is extraordinary.

In closing, don't judge my brother by what you read on this blog! I am responsible for everything that is written. If you want to blame someone for being too confident, BLAME ME! The only reason I MAY appear this way is because I have witnessed his success and skill develop beyond belief and I know how great he can be. Richard lives for two things; God and Soccer! He believes it's God's plan for his life, a way for him to witness to others, and I agree. My brother prays before every game and he gives praise to God after every goal he scores. Because of my brother's faith in God and his belief in himself, I know(sooner or later) God will speak to a very lucky coach and say, "Sign this kid, with your help, he will accomplish great things"!

Richard Jata left the Tampa Bay Rowdies Combine with high hopes, but an uneasy feeling in his heart. After being informed that the team was interested, all Jata could do was sit back and wait for that contract offer to be presented. But for some reason, the Rowdies decided to go in another direction. When Jata asked why, he was told that they liked him, but they just didn't know where he would fit into their plans. It seems like some teams nowadays want to go for the safe call, when that "diamond in the rough" is still waiting for his chance to shine. Determining an individuals' ability and maximum potential in just 3 days (with random teammates) is a lot to ask for. Jata's best moment at the combine came when he delivered a beautiful left-footed inswinging corner kick to the back post, where a fellow teammate was waiting to knock it in.

Time and time again, Jata has proven himself, but for some reason he has yet to find that coach who will take him to the next level. He has the marketability (Rookie Life: Diary of a Draft Pick - 2009), he has the support from many followers(almost 10,000 hits on this site) and he's a great kid who just wants to play the game. The 16 videos I uploaded on YouTube have amassed over 14,000 views and the 2009 MLS Draft Summary has over 10,000 views. He's an entertainer (Doing flips after he scores, Best Draft Speech Ever) and he showed us that he can accomplish great things with the time he spent at Campbell. Think about it; Campbell went 20-1-1 when Jata scored, they defeated UNC 3 years in a row(a team consistently ranked in the top 10 every year-Jata scored the game-winning goal twice), and in his final year, when Campbell started the year 2-5(Jata was injured), they finished the year on a 12-game win streak and a 10-0 record in conference play. This streak gave Campbell one of the highest rankings in school history(#22 in the country). They ended up losing the final game of the year against Jacksonville in the A-Sun Conference Final. Jata notched 2 goals in that game, and it is the only game in Jata's history at Campbell that they lost when he scored. Jata was named Player of the Year his senior year in high school (Ridgewood-Pasco County) AND his senior year in college(Campbell-Atlantic Sun Conference). These are the reasons why Furman offered him practically a "Full Ride". Doug Allison knew Richard had the potential to be great. Why else would he tell Jata that he would be better than Clint Dempsey? Did he say it just to say it, I doubt it! Jata proved it! He led Furman in scoring and in total points as a freshman. After Jata was mistreated by the assistant coach, he left Furman and that is when Wake Forest offered him a 50% scholarship. The only reason they didn't offer him a full ride was because they had already given most of their scholarship money away and that's all they could offer him at the time. Campbell offered him a full ride and Doug Hess really took Richard under his wing. Just look at the result....Great Coach + Great Player + Great Teammates = Great Success!

Jata has played for many great coaches throughout his short career; Peter Mannino(played with Pele on the New York Cosmos)-Clearwater Chargers, Tom Durkin-IMG Academy(where he was the youngest player(16) to play for the IMG PDL team), Doug Allison-Furman Head Coach, Joe Brown-Carolina Dynamo Head Coach(played with Sam Cronin), and Doug Hess-Head Coach @ Drexel(Former Head Coach @ Campbell). He also trained with the U.S. National U-17 team under John Hackworth. Ask any of these coaches about the talent and skill level Jata possesses and I highly doubt you will hear anything but praise.

Jata Performs Well at Rowdies Combine

With the 3-day combine(in Tampa) over and done with, Rowdies executives now have to make their decision on who to sign. Based on what I've heard, I don't expect too many local players to be offered contracts. I'm assuming maybe five, at the most!

Jata felt confident about his tryout, but he still realizes that there is room for improvement. These combine sessions are really hard when it comes to judging a player. A great pass can be overlooked if the player on the receiving end looses it quickly. A great shot can look mediocre, if the goalie makes a great save. Obviously, team cohesion is not all there, but I believe this combine was a success overall.

Brian Shriver, Tanner Wolfe, Ryan Maxwell, Jordan Seabrook, Steven Morris and Richard Jata were just some of the established local players looking to make the cut, featured in this USL news article a little while back.

A few days ago, after the 2nd combine had finished, Jata was featured in another article written by Nicholas Murray of the Tampa Tribune, titled Players Impress Rowdies Management at Combine. Among the others mentioned in the article were Joe Donoho, Kirk LaBusch and Jay Ayers.

With the 2010 MLS season right around the corner, the Philadelphia Union are set to make some moves. After picking up 15 players in the MLS expansion draft, they still have room on their roster for some bright young talent. Jata has been invited to a second tryout for a soon-to-be Tampa Bay Rowdies team. Will his quest lead him to the USL, or will he finally be able to find a MLS team looking for something more than just a soccer player? Maybe an entertainer? One who can put fans in the seats?

Jata Still On Trial In France - (New Team)

After spending some time with US Le Pontet, Richard Jata has moved on to test his chances with another French squad. Apparently a deal could not be reached, but Jata was advised to stay in France and take another route. The team in question now is AC Arles of Avignon. Since Jata has been out of training for the last few months, the contract he looks to sign would be with their Semi-pro team. I was told that he would train with them for the next 4 months, and thereafter would be signed to their 2nd division team if he shows well. Jata thinks that the training he will endure in the coming months will get him ready to make a run at the AC Arles squad, but if it doesn't work out, he should be in great shape for the start of the 2010 MLS Preseason.

In other news, Jata was recently named the 2008-2009 Outstanding Male Athlete for Campbell University, an award that he is extremely honored to receive. During his final season with the Camels, Jata notched 7 game-winning goals in his last nine games and finished the year with 12 goals and 4 assists. He was also named the A-Sun Player Of The Year. Coincidentally, Jata was given the same award as a senior in high school. That year, he led the Ridgewood Rams to a 17-3-4 record and a #5 ranking in Florida. Jata led the team in scoring with 33 goals and 17 assists(83 points).

The future looks promising for Jata as long as he remains healthy. The training he will receive in France could help expand his game and make him a solid prospect in the years to come. More updates on Jata's journey overseas coming soon!

Jata Gets "THE CALL" - Destination: France

With several countries still eyeing former Campbell University midfielder Richard Jata, a team in South France looks to act first. Earlier today Jata received a call summoning him to France, IMMEDIATELY! After talking to his agent and team personnel, Jata agreed to fly out this Thursday with intentions of signing his first professional contract. All the details have not yet been finalized, but it looks like the team in question is looking to add Jata before anybody else can get a good look at him. This move could prove to be very costly for the Chicago Fire because if Jata signs, they lose every opportunity of having him back next preseason. With Blanco and McBride nearing the end of their careers, the Fire will have to look elsewhere for attacking power.

Currently Denmark, Sweden, Germany, and the United Kingdom were just some of the countries expressing interest in Jata, but it looks as if the highly talented attacker will be making the move to France. Jata currently lives in Chicago, but with the seriousness expressed by the team(soon to be released) he might just be leaving the windy city behind for good. Jata's quick departure shows that the team is extremely interested and it's possible that his first professional contract could be drawn up as soon as Friday. More updates on the way!

Rookie Life: Diary of a Draft Pick just took their most recent episode to a whole new level. This time they devoted an entire show to Richard Jata. A late draft pick with plenty of talent, Jata showed promising skill in the preseason, but injuries and the flu forced him to miss several key games. These missed opportunities left Chicago Fire Head Coach, Denis Hamlett, with a hard decision going into the regular season. Jata was one of the last players to be released among all MLS teams, but his story continues to live on.

Episode 16 - Jata Resurfaces With The Fire gives fans an opportunity to see what the 23 year old has been doing since moving to Chicago. Right now, Jata is happy with where he is at. He's enjoying everything Chicago has to offer, plus he's been staying in great shape. Jata's been biking all around the city, playing in a men's league and continuing to train for his next opportunity with the MLS. Whether that happens this year or next year, Jata will be there with more determination than ever before.

One quick note to leave you all with.....At the 2:20 mark in this weeks' Rookie Life, Jata is shown juggling with his left foot, but dropping the ball shortly after. Don't let this clip fool you! Right before Jata left for Furman University(on a full ride) in August of 2004, he recorded an astonishing 2,316 juggles at just 18 years of age.

Jata's Move to Chicago.....Permanent!

With pro soccer still on his mind, Richard Jata decided a permanent move to Chicago was the right move to make. Lately he's been biking and walking all over the place to get familiar with the windy city. I heard summers are great there, but Jata went there with one purpose, and one purpose only, to get in shape for next year and to learn as much as he could from the Chicago Fire Organization.

Jata's been working like a man on a mission ever since arrival. Even though he didn't make the cut, staff from the Fire Organization enjoyed his attitude and work ethic so much, that they helped him get a job working at Toyota Park. Jata has also been working the soccer camps at UIC(University of Illinois-Chicago), where Chicago Fire rookie, Baggio Husidic, played his college soccer career. Not only that, Jata's been playing full 90-minute games with the B.H. Lilly's, a men's team located in Chicago, to keep his skills fresh, his passing crisp and his killer shot on target.

The 10th episode of Rookie Life: More Valleys than Peaks focuses on the low points experienced by a few of the players. Some struggle to finish golden opportunities, while others make mental mistakes. Richard Jata lets you know how difficult it can be when you don't make the team. People believed in his talent, but for some reason the coaches didn't see him fitting in.

After spending the last two months at home with family and friends, Jata has decided to move to Chicago to be closer to former teammate Baggio Husidic and other players on the Chicago Fire. With this move, Jata plans on reuniting with coach Dennis Hamlett in hopes of training with the team.

Do The Chicago Fire Need Richard Jata?

After a disappointing tie last night, I'm beginning to question whether or not the Chicago Fire need to make some changes. They let a 2-0 lead slip away after some late and questionable subs. Marco Pappa played a great game in place for Justin Mapp, but the defense looked lost at times. Tim ward didn't play the best of games and Thorrington played well, but lost the ball when he tried to take on opposing defenders. It looks as if the Fire are lacking some solid talent off the bench, even though the depth of their bench was heavily praised before the season even started.

Besides the fact that Chicago almost gave the game away, that isn't their only problem. Where did the Fire's fan base go? Last night only 10,000 fans showed up on a Saturday night game. Last year their attendance was near the top of the league and this year a lot has changed. The Fire still remain undefeated, which makes it even more perplexing as to why their fan base is shrinking and not growing. Bringing Richard Jata back to the team has the potential to stir up some talk among Fire fans. His draft speech has been heard around the world and people want to see what this kid can bring to the table. As it stands now, Justin Mapp, Peter Lowry, CJ Brown, Daniel Woolard and Calen Carr are all out with injuries. It looks as if the depth they used to have is running out.

Chicago has one of the best teams and best facilities in the league, but they really need to improve on their marketing and advertising. Give some tickets out during the week. Send some to the radio stations and have people call in to win them. Do some promotions at the local pubs and clubs. Visit the schools and give out some apparel. Pay more attention to the fan base by giving them what they want. Maybe the fans want Richard Jata. If that's the case, bringing him back may not be a bad idea. After all, Jata was the last remaining trialist in camp until the rosters were finalized, plus he played through most of the preseason with a groin injury. Obviously he has talent to be in the pros, otherwise he would've been sent home a lot earlier.

After spending the last three weeks with the Charleston Battery, Richard Jata has declined an offer to stay with the team through this season. Obviously moving from the Chicago Fire to USL is a step down and Jata didn't see himself fitting into their system. The Battery already had their team established for the upcoming year and they had very little to offer in the salary department. Look for Jata to test the waters in Europe, unless the MLS comes calling first. Some countries already showing interest are Norway, Argentina, Germany and the United Kingdom.

The Battery tied the Wilmington Hammerheads the other day, where fellow MLS Combine participant Calum Angus is on trial.

With the MLS season clearly underway, the chances of Jata returning to the Chicago Fire are getting slimer. If the Battery sign Jata in the next few days, the Fire will be left without his services for the entire season. This could be a big signing for the Charleston Battery and a big loss for the Fire. However, if Jata only signs a one-year contract, the Fire can still bring him back for next years' preseason.

Rookie Life: MLS SuperDraft - Episode Three

The latest episode of Rookie Life: Diary of a Draft Pick deals with the 2009 MLS SuperDraft. Steve Zakuani was selected with the first overall pick, Sam Cronin went second, and so on, all the way down to number 58, Richard Jata. Chris Pontius, Omar Gonzalez, AJ Delegarza, Stefen Frei and Jean Alexandre share their feelings heading into draft day, but most of this episode is dedicated to Jata. It's clip time, five specifically of Jata from college; four goals and one defensive stop.

Jata has spent the last week training with the Charleston Battery at their facility. Before any contact negotiations start, the Fire will have to be notified because they have Jata's rights for two years. Recently, Andrew Dykstra signed a contract because C.J. Brown went down with an injury. If Brown's injury is season-ending and Carr can't make it back in the next four games, Jata could get called back up to play with Chicago.

I also feel that some other MLS teams will want to have a look at Jata. He played well against Kansas City in the preseason, but he never really got the chance to play center mid with the starting squad. The Fire kept him as long as they could, which hindered Jata's chances of training elsewhere. If he almost signed a contract with the Fire I'm sure he would fit into another system, one that lacks an attacking mid. I think Colorado could be a possibility as well as a number of other teams. With all of the USMNT games and extra games this year, I'm sure we will see our fair share of injuries too. At this point, anything can happen.

Rookie Life: The MLS Combine - Episode Two

The second episode of Rookie Life: Diary of a Draft Pick takes aim at the MLS Combine. The players share their thoughts on the experience and how they felt about their performance. Some of the players thought they did good while others struggled to find their rhythm.

Richard Jata is scheduled to meet up with the Charleston Battery (USL) over the weekend. The team has a few more games left before the season starts, and even after recently signing two new players, the Battery still want Jata to come out for a look. After checking out their roster a few times, I realized that a lot of these players have already played in the MLS.

For those of you who can't wait to see more rookie footage of Jata, it won't be long. The third episode of Rookie Life will becoming out shortly. In the meantime, the MLS has personally sent Jata a video camera so that he can film his progress while apart from the Fire. If all goes well, don't be surprised to see Jata back on an MLS team by the end of the season.

At the beginning, all of the players are introduced with footage from the 2009 SuperDraft and then it highlights each of them individually. If you want to see Richard Jata, watch the beginning and then fast forward to the 10:05 mark. At the 10:43 mark, there is a short clip from Chicago's preseason game with the Kansas City Wizards. Jata pulls down a ball with his right foot and takes it towards goal. It's a brief clip, but if you watch it a few times it's pretty incredible.

"Breaking News" - Chicago Fire Final Roster

After months of training and preparation, the Fire have finally decided on their 24 man roster. Richard Jata lasted as long as he could, but in the end, Dennis Hamlett decided to stick with the guys he had last year. Jata had some great moments in training camp, but battled the last two weeks with the flu. Besides Baggio Husidic(Generation Addidas), Jata was the last of the draftees to remain in camp. As I predicted earlier, Tim Ward and Austin Washington have both signed with the team. Ward signed a Senior contract and Washington signed a Senior Developmental. Stefan Dimitrov has not yet officially been named to the roster, so there could be something holding back the paperwork.

The Dimitrov signing would push the roster to 24 and Andrew Dykstra is still in camp. It is my understanding that Calen Carr, being listed as a DL, will have to miss at least 6 games and his roster spot will have to be filled in the meantime. This being said, expect the Fire to keep Dykstra in Carr's spot until he is ready to return. After those six games are up, look for Chicago to let Dykstra go, keep him and put Carr back on the Disabled List, or keep Dykstra and let Carr go. If Busch is going to miss time with the USMNT, the Fire are going to need a backup for Nick Noble.

Jata Still Fighting for a Spot (Unofficial Signing)

Today the Fire arrived in Arizona for the final leg of their preseason. They will train tomorrow morning at 10am, but I'm not sure if they are still doing two-a-days. Lately, there have been talks about another signing, but nothing is official yet. I will go through the draft picks, cuts and new signings one by one to let everyone out there know where Chicago stands with regards to its roster.

As most of you already know, Stefan Dimitrov has officially signed a Senior contract with the Chicago Fire. According to the roster listed on their website, that leaves two spots left to fill.

Jata has been making a name for himself ever since he arrived on the scene. His SuperDraft Speech will have a special place in history and it doesn't stop there. He's been one of just eight rookies selected to take part in Rookie Life: Diary of a Draft Pick, which focuses on each players' first season with their respectable squad. Every other player in this MLS Special has already signed a contract. With Jata being one of the last players selected at the draft, it's not unlikely that he'll be one of the last players to sign.

Austin Washington

Washington seems to be doing all the right things in camp because it looks as if he'll be sticking around for another year. He has a great attitude and a good work ethic, but if the Fire have already spent two years developing him, what's the point in keeping him around. On the other hand, with a few aging defenders and others looking to Europe, he might be more useful than we think.

With Busch possibly missing some games due to U.S. Men's National Team duties, the Fire might see it necessary to keep him as their third keeper. If Busch doesn't expect to miss time and if the goal keeper pool is legit, look for Chicago to let Dykstra go.

A young kid with a lot of experience. He's been playing with both the first and second team, but he looks like a solid lock to sign a Senior Contract this year. Look for money and contract negotiations to make or break this deal.

Injuries bothered David for the first half of the preseason and things haven't gotten any better. Trained with the team in California, but he never really had a chance in the first place.

Showed promise early on in the Fire preseason, but contract negotiations may have sent him packing. I personally feel that he is too small for the MLS, but he sure can run a lot. Being offered a developmental contract may have pushed him away.

Also plagued with injuries for most of the preseason. Never really got to improve his stock from the combine. Good with the ball, but the Fire just couldn't see him in their future plans.

Now this is a hard one. Injury plagued year, plus he'll be out for at least another few months. He's on the DL, but I'm really not sure what that means. Will the Fire get to add an extra player by keeping him on the Disabled List?

From what I heard, Peter Lowry is not in the clear just yet. If the Fire decide to sign Andrew Dykstra and they don't want to let Jata go, look for Lowry to be on the chopping block.

Preseason Winding Down (Rookie Life Preview)

The Chicago Fire will be kicking off their season in less than two weeks and the final roster has still not been set. The team will play UC-Irvine today at 4pm PT giving the second team, the trailists and the rookies a shot at some much needed playing time. David Sias, Richard Jata, Andrew Dykstra and Austin Washington should all play a considerable amount, with hopes of increasing their current stock. I'm looking for Jata, to come out and impress after missing the last two games with the flu. He's been patiently waiting for his chance to shine and I believe that the time is now. His fitness level has been growing and growing since the start of training camp, and just recently, he ran the two mile in under 12 minutes. Chris Rolfe has been out sick, Busch and Thorrington are nursing injuries and Peter Lowry is back in Chicago, possibly doing rehab as well. With that being said, the starting lineup for tomorrow should look something like this:

The team will be leaving LA for Arizona on Wednesday(3/11) in preparation for their final preseason game vs. LA Galaxy. Training prior to the game, will be done at Arizona State University. The match is set to take place on March 14th(7pm MT) at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona.

McBride's goal is really nice and it shows that his presence this year will be very crucial in Chicago's run at the MLS CUP.

Chicago Fire Defeat Chivas USA 2-1

Earlier this morning the Fire took care of business by beating Chivas USA 2-1. Justin Mapp started the scoring in the 19th minute, off a pass from William Conde(playing center mid). Less than 10 minutes later Chicago would add to their lead. Brian McBride scores the quote, "preseason goal of the year" assisted by Patrick Nyarko.

Halftime Score: Chicago Fire 2 - Chivas USA 0

In the 70th minute, Sacha Kljestan scored on a Penalty Kick, but it wasn't enough to comeback. This is the Fire's 6th preaseason victory, including their 6-0 win a couple days ago against a local California squad. In today's game the Chicago Fire only made two substitutions.

The other night I stumbled upon this video of Marco Pappa, Logan Pause and Richard Jata, which was made while the Chicago Fire were training in Bradenton, FL. Marco and Logan talk in the beginning, but at the 38 second mark, the camera shows Jata giving some clips and sound bites to some media personnel. I think it has something to do with the rookies and their desire to make it in the MLS.

Jata is still in the running for the 24th and final spot on the 2009 Chicago Fire roster. I believe that they have solidified 23 spots, but are leaving the last spot open until the team finishes training in California. I'm looking for Jata to get some playing time against Chivas USA on March 7th, in hopes of upping his stock before the Fire staff makes their final decision.

With the preseason winding down and roster compliance issues on the horizon, we will soon know all 24 players who have made the team, and eventually, which 18 will be dressing for the first game in Texas on March 21st. It's going to be very interesting to see how everything works out in the next two weeks, not just for the Chicago Fire, but for every team. I know that the coaches want their starters to be ready for the Fire's first game of the season, so I don't expect to see a lot of substitutions in the team's next two games against Chivas USA and LA Galaxy. This is going to make it a lot harder for those players fighting for the final spot because some of them may not even get to see a minute of playing time in the upcoming games. This is one of the deepest teams in the league, and with the new size rosters, it's going to be extremely hard for any rookie to make this team. San Jose, on the other hand, only has 21 players on their current roster, even after adding recent draftees Amarikwa and Ring, plus Cam Weaver and Bobby Convey. How many rookies (out of the 60 drafted) do you think will sign with the MLS this season?

Chicago Fire Return Home (Bonus Video)

The Chicago Fire returned home yesterday, where they will stay, until departing for California on March 2nd. I've been hearing some rumors about who is "in" and who is "out", but I don't want to say anything until it's official. However, if you asked me to name the 24 players who will be on the 2009 Fire roster, I could probably name 23 right now, with the final spot still up for grabs. With very little being advertised on the Fire website and En Fuego Blog, I thought I'd take a little time to talk about the lack of media coverage for several teams throughout the MLS.

It seems like there are a lot of people out there who want to know more about the players, the clubs and the recent draftees, but for some reason the MLS is slacking in the media department. I've been following the Fire website and Blog a lot this preseason, and for the most part, its been somewhat disappointing. I was looking at the Seattle Sounders website the other day, and for a team that just started this year, they really have their s**t together. The site looks great, they interview several players, show several video clips and they also have their own analyst constantly giving updates. The quality of the footage is the best I've seen yet. For a fan and a big follower of the MLS, I really hope they start putting some more effort into preseason footage down the road. Some teams are so secretive about what they are doing, but it's really not helping them gain exposure. It's also a huge turnoff to supporters. Hopefully coverage throughout the entire league picks up quickly because it's really getting annoying looking at the same updates for days and days.

While we're waiting for something new to read about, I thought I'd show you one of my favorite clips of Richard Jata from his time at Campbell. This clip is also in the Highlight Video I put together, but it shows a lot in a very little amount of time and that's why I wanted to show it on it's own. Notice his quickness, the use of his left foot and his ability to find the open player with very little effort.

Chicago Fire Defeats Morelia 3-1 In Mexico

The Fire defeated Monarcas de Morelia in Celaya, Guanajuato, Mexico last night 3-1. Chicago got things started in the 34th minute when Justin Mapp placed a free kick into the box where Brian McBride was waiting with that brilliant head of his, putting the Fire up 1-0 going into halftime. Morelia would eventually get on the board in the 58th minute on a PK by Sergio Blancas, after Austin Washington was called for a hand ball inside the box. Just four minutes later the Fire would regain the lead off a corner kick by Chris Rolfe. This time Washington was on the recieving end, scoring his first goal of the preseason. The game would stay that way until the 89th minute when Mike Banner placed a free kick around the wall and in, to give him his second preseason goal from distance. Richard Jata, Stefan Dimitrov, Jokull Elisabetarson, David Sias and Roland Paul Bebey Kingue did not see any playing time in last nights' match, which makes it seem like Hamlett really wants to get his starting squad playing full games together in preparation for their season opener against FC Dallas on March 21st. The team will be returning to Chicago on Thursday(February 26th) where they will stay until leaving for California on March 2nd. The Fire will play their final two preseason games against Chivas USA on March 7th, at the Home Depot Center and the LA Galaxy on March 12th in Tempe, Arizona.

Fire Battle Against Queretaro FC Reserves!

Today the Chicago Fire took on the Queretaro FC reserve squad to make up for the game against Leon that was canceled earlier in the week. The 2nd team started the game for the Fire and went into halftime with a 2-0 lead. The starters came in to play the second half, but gave up two unanswered goals, giving the Fire their second straight preseason draw since arriving to Mexico. Richard Jata played the entire first half at right mid, which I heard worked out in his favor. The Fire will square off against Morelia on Tuesday(8pm), in what will be their final preseason match in Mexico before returning to Chicago on Thursday. More details to come....

Well, I finally found out how the second team for the Fire scored in the first half. Stefen Dimitrov found the net from a couple yards out after Patrick Nyarko slide a pass across the mouth of the goal. Nyarko is continuing to show promise by getting into spaces where he causes a lot of problems for opposing defenders. On the second goal, Nyarko ran onto a punt that bounced over the defender's head. He chipped the keeper on his first touch to give Chicago the lead going into the half. The two second half goals allowed by the first team came off a PK and a breakaway. The Fire's preseason record now stands at 3-1-2 with 12 goals scored and just 6 given up.

No Glory, No Defeat - Chicago vs. Queretaro FC

Well, I just got some news about the Fire's first game in Mexico vs. Queretaro FC. The stadium they played in is called "La Corregidora" and supposedly it seats around 40,000 people. The atmosphere was great and the game pulled in a crowd close to 15,000. From what I heard, the fans down there have been waiting eargely for the Fire's arrival. Kids are mobing the buses and it has to be a really cool experience for the rookies. Tonight's game ended in a 1-1 draw as both teams netted goals late in each half. Chicago got on the board late in the first half when John Thorrington carried the ball towards the center of the field and distributed it to Justin Mapp just outside the box on the left side of the field. Mapp went one on one with the defender beating him to the left and then cutting it back to his right foot for a great goal from about 10 yards out. The Fire went into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

Jon Busch didn't play in the game at all, but Thorrington and Rolfe both played respectable minutes.

Queretaro FC finally got on the board very late in the game just before stoppage time off a direct free kick. The Fire were waiting for the referee's whistle while setting up the wall, and before they knew it, a player from Queretaro FC broke free from the outside of the wall and netted a thru ball to tie the game up 1-1. With less than a minute left in the game, Jata had a chance to shoot from about 30+ yards, but instead he laid it off to another Fire player who was later denied of glory, ending the game in a 1-1 draw.

The Fire were supposed to take on Leon this Sunday, but unfortunately the game has been canceled. I guess we'll just have to wait until next Tuesday, the 24th, to see how they play against Morelia. The game will be at the same time(8pm) so I'll try to have the results of that game up late Tuesday, early Wednesday. Even though I'm enjoying some great weather here in Florida, I really wish I had the opportunity to catch one of these games in Mexico. More updates(and hopefully pictures) on the way.....

They Made It To Mexico!

I've never seen two players fighting for the same spot be so friendly to one another, but I guess that's the way it goes with rookies. Sometimes they don't fit in with the team right away so a strong bond develops. Baggio and Jata were roommates in Bradenton, toured Chicago together and now they are training partners in Mexico. Technically, Jata and Baggio aren't fighting for the exact same spot though. Baggio is a defensive center mid with good attacking qualities and Jata is an attacking center mid with good defensive qualities. Baggio already has a contract and Jata doesn't, but that's not stopping them from living it up. They both are truly enjoying this once in a lifetime experience that only a handful of players get to do each year. Free gear, free traveling expenses and free food doesn't come easy though. These two have worked their whole lives to get this far and it looks as if it is finally paying off. Hopefully Jata will make the team, but it's not going to be easy. Earlier in the week, Jata was informed that he is one of six players fighting for two spots on the final roster. He is going to need a strong showing in Mexico to prove to the coaches that he deserves a spot, and being his brother, I think that's exactly what he'll do.

The Chicago Fire will be playing three games in Queretaro, Mexico over the next 10 days. Their first game will be tomorrow at 8pm against Queretaro FC. Their second game will be against Leon on Sunday, the 22nd at noon and the last game will be on Tuesday the 24th at 8pm. In the third game, Chicago will take on Morelia, which is the team Sonny Guadarrama plays for. For those of you that don't know, Sonny and his brother Willy both played for Campbell University. However, since Jata arrived to Campbell his Sophomore year he missed out on the opportunity to play with Sonny.

I heard the weather is actually somewhat enjoyable down there right now, with the high in the upper 70's (low 80's) and the low in the 40's. This should make the night games very interesting for Jata because he's proven to be very dominate in colder climates. I guess we will just have to wait and see. Tomorrow's game will be here soon enough and I really wish I was there to see it, but I guess I can't complain since I'm in Florida and the beach is just a couple of minutes away. I'll try to have the report up tomorrow night, but if I don't get to it, look for it on Thursday. Adios Amigos!

Watch and Wait (Highlight Video)

While we wait to hear more about the Fire's preseason, I thought I'd give you guys the chance to view Richard Jata's Highlight Video(below) that I made about a month ago. It's about 10 minutes long and by the end it should give you a general idea of how talented this kid really is. He scored 32 goals total in college, but I could only get 17 on here because not all of the games were filmed. I also have a goal from the time he spent with the Carolina Dynamo. The first part of the video is just some passing and dribbling, but the video gets better and better as it goes on. The goals that took longer to find are towards the end, but take the time to watch the whole thing and let me know what you think at the end of it.

The Chicago Fire will be leaving for Mexico tomorrow and I'll try to post the results of their games as soon as possible. I'm curious to see how the team lines up in Mexico with Rolfe, Thorrington and Busch all back from training with the U.S. Men's National Team.

Preseason Game #4 - Chicago vs. Toronto FC

Today the Chicago Fire took on Toronto FC in their 4th and final preseason game at IMG in Bradenton. They played a regular game with two 45 minute halves and the Fire came out on top 1-0. Mike Banner scored the lone goal off a free kick in the 41st minute of play. Each team had some chances, but couldn't find the net. Richard Jata sat out this game to rest a tight groin, but he said that he's doing just fine and expects to be back in action when the team heads to Mexico on the 15th. Rolfe, Thorrington and Busch will also be traveling with the team to Mexico.

Preseason Game #3 & My New Best Friend

The Chicago Fire beat the Puerto Rican Islanders 1-0 yesterday in their third preseason game. McBride converted on a penalty kick after Nyarko was brought down in the 8th minute of play. The teams played two 45 minuted halves, but played an extra 20 minutes at the end so that all of the subs could get some playing time. Both teams had goals called back, but overall the Fire dominated the game.

Jata sat out to get some rest, but most likely will return to action on Monday. All of the players had Sunday off. The team will finish up at IMG with a training session tomorrow, followed by their 4th preseason game against Toronto FC on Tuesday. The team will then head back to Chicago for a few days before departing to Mexico on February 15th. I expect the team to make some cuts before their next trip, but I think all of the draft picks will stay on no matter what. David Sias and Jokull Elisabetarson have both been sitting out due to injury, but they should be ready to return to action soon.

I went down to Bradenton to see Richard and things seem to be going very well. He's rooming with Baggio Husidic and it looks like they're really getting along great. They both had nothing but good things to say about each other and I expect to see a lot out these two in the future. With the entire starting squad returning from last season, playing time will be hard to come by, but with all of the extra games in the schedule this year I think we'll get to see both of them play at some point in time. I'm looking forward to the next couple of weeks, but I will bring you an update on Tuesday following their game with Toronto FC.

Preseason Game #2 - Fire vs. KC Wizards

Today the Chicago Fire took on the Kansas City Wizards in what would be their first true test after routing UCF 5-0 just a few days earlier. Instead of playing three 30-minute segments like they did in the first game, they played two 45-minute halves.

Richard Jata played the entire second half. He started at forward, but switched to right mid after the Fire gave up three unanswered goals. Jata had a good chance to score when he caught a ball sent over his head on his right foot and took it towards goal. Unfortunately, the Kansas City keeper guessed right and made a great save to deny Jata of his first preseason goal with the Fire.

The Fire dominated the first half and in the 38th minute their hard work finally paid off. Roland Paul Bebey Kingue served a cross from the right side to Patrick Nyarko, who headed it home for his first preseason goal. In the 40th minute Nyarko added another goal from 18 yards out to give the Fire a 2-0 lead going into halftime.

In the 49th minute Kansas City finally got on the board when Aaron Hohlbein headed home a Kevin Souter corner kick. In the 53rd minute Graham Zusi was taken down in the box and awarded a PK. Davy Arnaud shoots left and the keeper guesses right, scoring with ease to tie the game up 2-2.

At the 60-minute mark, Fire GK Andrew Dykstra was subbed out for Tyler Kettering and just minutes later the Wizards scored again to grab the lead. Zusi played a corner kick into the box and Rauwshan McKenzie hits a well placed header just under the bar for the final goal of the game.

Idrissa Kone had an opportunity to tie the game in the closing minutes when he found himself one on one with the Wizards' goalkeeper, but was denied.

Even though Chicago lost 3-2, things aren't as bad as they might seem. They're still missing Jon Busch, Chris Rolfe and John Thorrington, all of whom are still training with the U.S. Men's National Team in California. The rest of the starters from last year only played the first 45 minutes and Cuauhtemoc Blanco and Mike Banner didn't play at all.

Preseason Opener - Chicago Fire vs. UCF

The Fire handled business in their first preseason match yesterday against the University of Central Florida. The final score was 5-0, with Chicago dominating all three 30-minute segments. Brian McBride scored the first goal of the match and the game-winner in the 25th minute. Justin Mapp crossed a ball from the left corner of the field and McBride headed it home to get things started.

Stefen Dimitrov added two goals in the 31st and 51st minute of play. Richard Jata assisted on the third goal by placing a great thru ball to Dimitrov who chipped the keeper from approximately 30 yards out. Jata also had a scoring opportunity later on after being fouled just outside the box. His free kick attempt from 19 yards out was on target, but the UCF goalkeeper made a great effort to deny him of his first preseason goal.

The Fire finished strong with two goals late in the game from Michel Moungue(87th minute) and Idrissa Kone(89th minute).

The next game for Chicago will be against the Kansas City Wizards on February 4th at IMG Academy.

Quick Preseason Update - Bradenton, FL

Were just three days into the preseason and things are already picking up. The team spent the first couple of days doing drills and playing small sided games(6 vs. 6), but today they stepped it up a notch in preparation for their first preseason game against UCF this Sunday. The team is still missing Chris Rolfe, John Thorrington and Jon Busch, all of whom are still training with the U.S. Men's National Team. They will be absent at least until the USA vs. Mexico World Cup qualifier on February 11th. Then we'll find out if they are going to stay with the national team for a longer period of time. Two highly regarded players that have made their way to training camp are McBride and Blanco. With their presence they bring experience, great competition and leadership to what some may consider a young team.

Today the team played 11 vs. 11, but instead of playing a full 90 minutes, they cut the two halves down to 25 minutes each. I'm assuming the coaches are still taking things somewhat lightly(if you can believe that), however, I did hear that they have already let a couple of players go.

As far as Jata is concerned, I've gotten word that he's playing like a man on a mission. Today's game ended in a 0-0 tie, but Jata played attacking mid and got off a few good shots in the first full field game he's played since the MLS combine. In just three days the team will take on the University of Central Florida and I'm hoping to make it there to see Jata show the coaches what they never expected to see out of a 4th round draft pick. Chicago Fire Preseason Schedule

This weekend Jata will travel to Chicago for team physicals and then it's off to Bradenton, Florida for the next couple of weeks. There they will train and play against a number of teams at IMG Academy before heading back to Chicago. The team's Preseason Schedule is as follows:

Jata played for the IMG PDL team when he was just 16 years old and he tallied 35 goals and 19 assists in two years for the IMG club team. I suspect I'll be making it to one or two of the games, so I'll be updating Jata's progress as soon as I know more.

Well, I finally found it! The 2009 MLS SuperDraft speech by Richard Jata. An unbelievable moment for any player, but for Jata it was something more than that. You can see the pure joy and humility on display as he took the podium late in the draft. This is probably one of the most true and unrehearsed speeches I have ever seen, which makes it even that much more enjoyable to watch. It gives hope to the kids out there, all over the world, who have the dream of playing professional soccer. As Kevin Garnett once said, "Anything is possible."

With the 13th pick of the 4th round in the 2009 MLS Superdraft, the Chicago Fire select, from Campbell University, Midfielder, Richard Jata. Moments later Jata walks up and receives his scarf. He then proceeds to the podium to make a speech. After about five minutes, Jata makes reference to the fact that he had been talking for a long time. "I hope it's okay though, because I've been sitting there for an awfully long time waiting."

I heard that Jata's speech actually brought some observers to tears. After he left the podium he was immediately interviewed by the media. Then he was escorted to the hospitality room where he was interviewed once again.

Jata will be one of four other draftees set to attend training camp in Chicago starting January 24th. He will then have the chance to make the final squad and sign a contract with the team.

2009 MLS Combine - Final Day/Last Chance

Today was the final chance for the players at the combine to make a lasting impression. For some players it was really hard to get comfortable with their teammates and at times it seemed like nothing was working for them. I didn't get a chance to see the first game today, but I watched the second game and once again was impressed by a number of players on the Adidas Tunit squad. These are my observations from the 2009 MLS combine.

Overall, the combine was a great opportunity for some players to really increase their stock, but at the same time it hurt some players too. Only 60 of them will be selected come Thursday, which will make tomorrow one of the longest days' ever for many of them. Who will go first? Who will go in the first round? Who won't get picked at all?

Hopefully the coaches got to see what they wanted from all of the players, even though many of them never had the opportunity to showcase their full potential. I'm interested to see how things turn out.

I know Richard Jata has the ability to play at the next level, I just don't know where he's going to be heading. He'll definitely be one of the sixty players selected, but I can't pinpoint what round he'll go in. Jata probably will not go in the first round because the 9 Generation Adidas players are highly beneficial because of salary cap issues with most of the teams, but from the second round to the fourth round it's game on. Day 3 of the Combine - How We Doin?

The second day of games is usually a little more promising than the first and it gives players the opportunity to rise or fall depending on how they did day one. The Adidas Tunit Squad took on Adidas Tiro in the first game of the day, in what seemed to be a somewhat slow, but interesting game. Jata started the game as an attacking center mid, but the midfield lacked cohesiveness making it harder on Jata to shine. A couple players were playing out of position leaving too much room for the opposing team to take the ball down the line and start and attack.Day two was rough on some of the players because they haven't been playing as much and its easy to get sore from going all out on day one. Gostmanov didn't play at all because of an injury so the midfield lineup changed a little bit from yesterday. Poole started at the D-Mid position, with Boateng playing at left mid and Barklage was on the right. Marosevic and Revivo started up front and at the back(from left to right) was Wallace, Castenada, Ogunbiyi and Russell. Frei played keeper once again because he's the only one they have.

Boateng played a nice through ball to Marosevic on a diagonal run at the top of the box who finished it past Kocic midway through the first half. Adidas Tiro tied it up about ten minutes after some nice ball movement by Maxwell. The score was 1-1 at half.

The second half lineup changed a lot, but I think they played a little better as a team than they did in the first half. Jata started the second half on the bench, but made an appearance with about 20 minutes left in the game. Boateng was subbed in with him as well. They both went back to where they were playing the first half. This time Jata played much better. He played some good balls and looked quick on his feet. The game ended with the score tied at one a piece, but I feel that both teams still weren't playing up to their full potential.
Adidas Tiro looked strong in the back and I was really impressed with George John. He looked strong, agile and seemed to have everything under control. He was also very into the game and spoke to his teammates the entire time he was on the field. Kevin Alston also impressed me from right back as he did the day before. Adidas Tunit did much better with AJ Delegarza starting the second half. but he was subbed in place of Ogunbiyi which didn't help their lack of size at defense. Delagarza looked good as he did in the first game. Talkative, calm, fit and very good with the ball. These four defenders did nothing to hurt their stock on day two. If anything, they increased it.

In the second game of the day, Adidas Predator PowerSwerve beat Adidas AdiPure 2-0, but I didn't stay for this game so I don't have much to say about it. I heard that Quicny Amarikwa scored both goals, but that the first one might have actually been an own goal off a Sam Cronin corner kick.

Hopefully the off day will give all of the players time to rest up for the final showdown on Tuesday morning. I'm looking for Jata to take over the game on day three because he has the ability to play much better, even though he's already doing more than most of the competition anyways.

Day 2 of the Combine - Who Impressed?

Well, the first day of games are over and we know a little bit more about each player now. The first game between Adidas Tunit and Adidas Predator PowerSwerve ended 2-0 with Pontius scoring the first goal and Marosevic grabbing the second. The first goal was a right footed blast from approximately 20 yards out into the upper left side 24 minutes into the game. Senior or not, this kid is a first round pick no questions asked. Marosevic scored the second goal, but there really wasn't much to it. The 1st half ended with the Tunit squad up 2-0.

Jata came in for Gostmanov to start the second half, but Pontius played the entire 90 minutes. Richard played well, rarely loosing the ball. He displayed good ball skills and was quick on his feet. Jata had a chance to take a free kick from 20 yards out, but Joshua Boateng took it instead because he drew the foul. Jata then served a cross into the box from the left side to Pontius, but he didn't get enough of a head on it to get it past the opposing keeper. The game ended 2-0 with the Tunit squad dominating on both the offensive and defensive side.

Tomorrow I expect Jata to start because in my opinion he was definitely one of the best 11 players on his team. He has the skills and the pace to keep up with the rest of the players, but he brings much more to the table than the average midfielder. I am looking forward to watching him play at the combine tomorrow.

The second game ended 1-0 with Adidas AdiPure knocking off Adidas Tiro. The lone goal was scored by Jordan Seabrook after Jokull Elisabetarson played a brilliant thru ball over the top of the defense. Both teams had their chances to score in what seemed to be a pretty evenly matched game. For the most part the defenses on each team faired well, making it hard for both teams to score.

2009 MLS Combine - Day 1 (Training Session)

The first day of the MLS Combine was highly beneficial to all of the players with the training session at Holiday Park lasting about two hours. The four teams went through a 10-15 min warmup followed by various drills and eventually a light scrimmage. Some of the teams played goal to goal on a small field including keepers and the other teams played without keepers.

I had the opportunity to watch all of the teams, but I focused most of my time watching Adidas Tunit. I didn't know every player on the field, but some of the players that stood out to me were Chris Pontius, Peri Marosevic and AJ Delegarza. Pontius looked strong and quick, Marosevic the same(even though he lacks the size) and Delegarza looked sharp and quick. Pav Castaneda also played well. He showed good ball control, endurance and movement on the field.

Richard Jata had good skill and control in the small sided drills and his passing was extremely accurate in the final scrimmage. Even though Jata started out slow, in my opinion he finished the day well and was one of the top performers on the field for the Tunit squad.

I was impressed by a few other players and dissapointed with some as well, but I'm hoping it was due to a lack of competition in the last two months.

Saturday will be interesting to see how the teams work together on the field because after watching them scrimmage, some of the teams were getting pretty physical with one another. Alex Gonzalez was absent for the entire training session, but I heard he was supposed to arrive in time to play on Saturday.

Overall, it was great to see all of these players training together at the same time and I'm looking forward to tomorrow, in what will be a highly anticipated first matchup between Adidas Tunit and Adidas Predator PowerSwerve at 2:30pm.

MLS Combine Teams and Schedule Announced

Today the rosters were announced for the 4 teams set to participate at the combine this years MLS combine. Both Mike Grella and Marcus Tracy have decided not to attend, which will give others the opportunity to move their name further up the draft board. All of the teams have 18 players and 2 Generation Adidas players except for Jata's team, Adidas Tunit. They only have 17 players on the roster and 3 of them are Genration Adidas. Personally, I think they are the strongest team at the midfield an attacking positions, but their defense isn't to shabby either.

I'm interested to see how this weekend pans out, with the first game between Adidas Tunit and Adidas Preadator PowerSwerve being possibly the best game all week. Most of these players have had limited playing time in the last month or two so I wouldn't be surprised at all if it takes them a couple of days to get their game back. This would mean that the best games might come on the last day, but I don't see all of the players going hard all weekend, especially those who are highly coveted already.

I'm leaving for Ft. Lauderdale on Friday so check back in for updates on the games!

Well, January is finally here and the combine is only a week away. Even though Jata hasn't been recognized as a top prospect, I still think he has a chance to be first round selection. Jata has pace, he reads the game incredibly well, he creates opportunities for others and he knows how to score. What some people may not know is that Jata has some of the best ball skills I've seen at the college level. In the past few weeks I have had the chance to witness this first hand. I'm eager to watch him play at the combine because I really want to see him take on some of the best college players in the country. I'm also interested in seeing the look on people's faces when he proves to all the doubters that he can ball with the best of them.

More Good News for Jata!!

Just days after the 2009 Addidas MLS Combine list came out, the NSCAA announced their yearly awards. First, the All-Region Teams were announced, and after making second team All-South the past two years, Jata stepped it up a notch. He was one of four midfielders named to the first team this year, a team that was dominated by Wake Forest. Campbell's Senior defender Stephen Oyuga also made first team along with Jata. It wouldn't be much longer until Jata was struck with more good news. Today the All-American Teams were announced, and once again Jata was recognized. After netting 7 game-winners and finishing the season with 12 goals and 4 assists, Jata's performance was good enough to earn him a spot on this years NSCAA All-American Second Team. In the last 31 years, only five other Campbell players have been named to an All-American team.
